Default Should Pornography Be Allowed To Be Looked At In Public Libraries?

My sister (17) needs to do community service for high school so she went in for a training program to be a library computer tech; helping people who don't know how to work computers.

When she went to the library and took the tour of the workplace the group of teens saw a man on the computer looking at porn right in the center of the library. The kids asked the librarian if looking at porn was allowed?

The librarian said that yes looking at porn is allowed in public libraries. However they cannot be viewed on the "kid's computers". Also if someone in the library complains about what one is looking at they have the right to ask the person to leave or to move to another computer. But yes, porn is allowed in the libraries.

My sister didn't want to take the job because she was uncomfortable with this and also she didn't want to be the person to tell an adult (most likely a male) to turn off the porn on his computer. Really, that shouldn't be the job for 14-17 year olds.

So, what is your view on pornography in public libraries? My personal view is that it should be in a separate area of computers and have only adults signed to that section of the library and not dead in the center.

@ this thread and story, that's so random! idk how the hell the librarians let ppl look at porn LOL....

i don't know if they should be allowed, why not I guess?

I agree with you though, that shouldn't be allowed where kids are and it should be separate...i think it should be for 18+ at people's own discretion though..some people could be adults and not be mature enough, they could be like "hey little girl, wanna look at this?" Honestly it could happen but it shouldn't.

No. I think it is distasteful and inappropriate and should be banned
completely and people who try to view porn in libraries should be asked
to leave or the police will be called.

NO! That is something that should be done in private. Children could be exposed to it if it's at the library and that is unacceptable.

I don't think they should look at porn in public libraries either.

If we cannot view naked sex videos in a public library, then the terrorists have won.

I definitely think that it is inappropriate, and a misuse of public resources, and any argument that it could possibly be covered by the first amendment is ridiculous.

I found a couple of articles about it: http://www.freedomforum.org/template...cumentID=14226
http://annoyedlibrarian.blogspot.com...challenge.html

I think that public and school libraries should use software similar to "NetNanny" or SafeSearch to filter out explicit material at the server level, so it makes it very difficult to find - and helps keep viruses and malware off the systems.

I doubt there will be a lot of pervs that will actually ask the librarian for help finding the naughty stuff.

No way!! When I go to the library, all I want to focus on is finding the right book, not stepping in the wrong place.

At the county libraries where I visit, people are free to look at whatever they like on computers, but they are not allowed to view child pornography. If a person wants to look at an adult site, they are recommended (or required) to use a special screen that keeps others from seeing it and being offended.

I imagine the computers come with anti-virus software for certain sites?

Just watch out for the guys in the trenchcoats.

I'm a advocate for Free Speech, but I think that goes too far; my answer would be 'no'. I believe in freedom within established boundaries. Allowing public access to porn in a library would be crossing that boundary, in my opinion.

It's not really about if it's a guy or a girl. It's just like my mom always use to say, "There is a time and a place for everything." It maybe the time but the 'PUBLIC' Library aint that place.
