Has anyone here ever had a place of their own?? I'm talking about a place where you lived all by yourself, no wife, husband, kids, roomates, just you. Reason I ask, is because I looked at some apartments on Friday, and found one I really liked, and should be moving in sometime within the next few months, and was wondering what it was like. When you first lived alone, did you feel a sense of freedom, loneliness, fear, or all of the above. While I'm excited at the prospect of getting my own place, I must admit there is a small amount of fear that I'm feeling. Fortunately though, the place I'll be moving to is pretty close to my family, and so that alleviates much of the fear, and so mostly I'm just excited. Anyway, please tell me about your first experience with your own place, and if you have any advice for me, please feel free to share it. Thanks!!

I lived alone for about eight months last year. It was a relief to be away from the roomates I did have, but after a time, the loneliness was very bad. I would work and sleep. I'm convinced I was mildly depressed. I had one famly member nearby and a close friend that would come over, but it was still lonely.
I also quickly discovered that I could not afford it. rent was a little more than half was I was making, not including utilities. I would highly recommend that you reconsider if you are paying more than half your income. It just breeds stress and anxiety, and I hope never to feel that helpless and lonely again. On the other hand, if circumstances where slighly different, I would have been quite happy living on my own. |

After I graduated high I moved three hours away to attend college. The first year of college I lived in a duplex my uncle owned I lived with my cousin. We got along pretty well about 8 months later my cousin found out she was pregnant and a few months later she moved with the baby's father. I lived alone. I paid rent to my uncle so he could remodel or do repairs if necessary. I became good friends with the lady who lived in the other unit. She was a single mom with a daughter. I have lived alone for four years now. It does get lonely sometimes but I have friends and relatives that live close by.

As much of a loner as I am, I couldn't live alone for too long. My depression would get me. I want someone else in the house...but I don't always wan them by me. lol

Well, I have been living by myself for about 18 years now. When I first moved out of my parents place I was excited but also nervous. I was excited about experiencing a whole new level of freedom but also nervous about a whole new level of responsibility. Unfortunately the two do go hand in hand. I have always found that the freedom is worth the responsibility that goes with it. Loneliness has never been much of an issue for me but then I have always been a solitary person. All in all I have to say I enjoy living alone. It really works for me. That being said I know its not for everyone. I wish you all the best in this new experience. Welcome to the club!!

i lived alone for a couple of years before I got married, it was great - of course I was living alone because I had just had a few bad experiences with roommates that made me sick of dealing with idiots that rip you off and won't pay their share, so it was bliss to not have to deal with anyone else.
I don't really get lonely so it never really bothered me, but I don't know how it would affect anyone else. in terms of rent affordability, you should be looking at something that is roughly one quarter of your monthly income - and remember you are not going to have any roommates to fall back on either, so it would help to have an emergency fund. |

Before I met my husband, I lived alone for five years, age 20 to 25. I loved it. I was in in school part-time, and I was a bartender, and had no shortage of friends or boyfriends, so it was great. Two of those five years, I lived with someone, and we got engaged. I called the wedding off three weeks before the wedding.
I think loneliness can be taken care of fairly easily. Call a friend, visit someone. What can't be taken care of easily is an obnoxious roommate, who is a slob, late with the rent and has their honey sleeping over five nights a week, eating you out of house and home. Alone is the way to go, in my opinion. I'm only a phone call away.

I've been living on my own since '99 and I love it, and wouldn't have it any other way. It's complete freedom to walk around in your underwear, cleaning when you want, peace and quiet. I have two cats, a tv, and a computer to keep me company.

And of course as you mentioned, I know you, Lauren, Tara, Cathie, Donna, and other friends are just a phone call away, so that will help as well. At this point I think just about anything will be better than the situation I'm currently in. I'm really looking forward to it, it should be fun!!

Thanks alot for the financial advice. Fortunately, the place I'm moving to is very affordable, and I will actually be paying less there then what I'm currently paying, so that'll be a huge break for me financially. I also have a very small nest egg saved up which I'm planning to grow further in the coming months, so I should be okay financially. |
