Ed O'Neill is back as Al in this new series. Newly divorced from Peg and freed from jail following a physical brawl involving him and his fellow No Ma'am members and several feminists-including Marcy, who pressed assault charges against Al for socking her in the stomach and breaking her jaw, Al moves in with his widowed father Richard, played by Dick Van Dyke, who berates Al for marrying "that ugly slut", and regularly lectures him about not listening to his parents. Lee Grant shows up from time to time in flashbacks from Al's past.
