Pushing Daisies" may be close to pushing daisies.

According to industry sources familiar with the situation, ABC has decided not to produce any more episodes of the critically beloved show this season. Word of the show's apparent death began spreading around Hollywood Thursday morning, though an ABC spokeswoman insisted no decision has been made on the show's fate.

Under one scenario making the rounds, ABC might find a way to extend the options on the "Daisies" cast and crew for several months so that the show could be revived next season. But such a plan would be costly.

Producer Warner Bros. TV had no comment.

"Daisies" wraps production on its 13-episode fall order today. A decision to end the show has been expected for some time now, but it nonetheless represents a stunning reversal of fortune for the Warner Bros. Television-produced fantasy drama.

"Daisies" got a major promotional push from ABC a year ago as the network sought to launch a new Wednesday night. "Daisies" anchored the lineup at 8 p.m., and the combination of strong marketing and glowing reviews helped "Daisies" premiere to unexpectedly solid numbers.

While the show's ratings trended downward after its premiere, "Daisies" nonetheless did well during the fall, scoring a full-season pickup just weeks after its fall 2007 premiere. But then came the writers' strike.

Whatever momentum the show had was killed by the work stoppage, and when the strike was over, ABC made the decision not to bring the show back in the spring. Only nine episodes aired during the show's first season, and viewers had to wait more than nine months for the second season.

Despite another strong promo push, the second season of "Daisies" premiered to far lower ratings than the first.

Earlier this week, "Daisies" creator Bryan Fuller said he plans to wrap up the show's storylines via a comic book.

strong promotional push for the second season? when did that happen - if you weren't looking hard for it you'd miss it.

I'm still mad about how badly they treated the show in the first season; several episodes were partially preempted, or shown with the last 10 minutes cut to allow for "local programming"

this is a GOOD show and definitely deserves more of a chance.
