Marquis de Sade (to me) is one of the most fascinating people from history but also one who hardly anyone talks about.

The word "sadism" is derived from his name as he is also called the "Father of BDSM"; the sado-masochistic scene.

de Sade was a philosopher, author, atheist, and fighter for extreme freedom. He said that the highest principle in one's life was how to achieve personal pleasure by any means. He was one of the first people to publish erotic material to the mainstream press but with things many not even heard off for the 1700s. In his many novels and illustrations he described scatological fantasies, rape, animal sex, incest, sexual torture... etc; all family fun material.

During his life he was imprisoned in prisons and mental asylums when people were reporting on how insane he was. Prostitutes that he had picked up described to the authorities on their mistreatment by him when he tied them against their will and made them do things "they weren't paid to do". He was also imprisoned for blasphemy offenses as that was a severe crime in those days.

Marquis de Sade died alone in prison in his late 70s and his son destroyed all of his unpublished/unfinished material.

The film Quills is one of the many mainstream depictions on Marquis de Sade's life; starring Geoffrey Rush as "de Sade", along with Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Michael Caine.

Have you heard of this man before, or seen the movie Quills? What do you think of him?

I'm thinking the man must have thrown some really wild parties.

Besides that, I think the guy was a little unbalanced.

I haven't seen Quills, but I'm interested in reading de Sade's work, which lead to other classic Erotica like The Story of O. I take an interest because the genre is what I write in my free time. It's actually much more satisfying than watching mainstream porn.

Sure. I own 2 copies of Salo and a reprint of the book that inspired it. The book makes the movie look demure. I cant' say I'm particularly proud to own any of it, and I certainly wouldn't want my mother to read it, but I appreciate it for its extremeness. I haven't seen Quills, but I'd be interested in see what makes this guy tick. Or not.
