The graveyard shift for most places is 11pm - 7am. What are the best places to work graveyard shift and what are the worst places to work the graveyard shift?

I think the best places to work the graveyard shift would be places like hospitals and factories. They are safe and your not swamped with customers. All of the big bosses are away at that time of day.

The worst places to work the graveyard shift would be places like convenient stores, all night restaurants, and grocery stores. This time of night, these places are likely to be robbed. In our area, we had a convenient store robbery 5 years ago. A lot of stores in our area close at 11pm now. Then you have the tragic cases of Debra Poe and Donna Callahan.

Wherever you work though, your not 100% safe. This shift I would not work. But if I really had to, I would want someone to work with me. When you work alone, in a store this time of night by yourself, it is extremely dangerous.

I work the graveyard shift at a factory. You have to swipe your id card to get in & out of the doors, so it's fairly safe plus we have a security guard on duty.

Its the same where I work minus the security guard(budget cuts). I like second shift the best, but with the way my scheudle is set up, nights is the only time I can work.

^ Yeah second shift is great! I used to work it & it seemed like I got more done, plus getting more & better sleep. Third shift can sure be rough at times.

I worked as a 911 dispatcher for two years when I was in college. I worked a 6 hour shift during the day. I knew few people who worked the graveyard shift and they said it could be busy at times with calls. Also working 911 is pretty safe there was always cops and firefighters around our station.

Yeah, there was a man that got shot to death working late night at a convenient market up the road from my home.I felt bad for him because i had talked to him several times before he was shot. And it was hard to go back into the store knowing what happened. Thats one job i would never consider working.

How about working at a prison or a drug treatment center? Things tend to be slow at night yet the pay is great.

Haha, funny thing about this thread...

I work overnights at Target. And let me tell you, I quite enjoy it. We can do our work in peace, with no customers around, since Target isn't 24/7. Most of us work 10pm - 6am weekdays, or 9pm - 5am if it's Sunday (start 9pm on Sunday night, finish at 5am on Monday morning). We start when Target closes for the night.

to the op: it depends where you are working in a hospital on 3rd. anywhere but the er is fine. though the time goes by faster, i worked in an inner city hospital and it was a nightmare. gun shot victims/stabbings. then the families of the victims would show up in droves and we'd have to lock down th e/r. lots of drug overdoses or drunks which would mean use of restraints which was never a picnic. then during the winter you'd have to shoo away the homeless trying to sleep in the waiting room.

When I worked construction we occasionally had to work on an overnight job that couldn't be done during regular business hours.

The best night job we did was renovations on a bunch of Toys R Us stores. It was indoors, well lit, and dammit it was fun for me to work in a toy store.

The worst was when we had to work at a big scrapyard in Jersey City a few nights repairing equipment that was only shut down in the evening. The scrapyard was an okay place to work during the day; lots of heavy machinery running, large vehicles moving around, everyon is busy, etc. But at night with just a skeleton crew and spotlights shining down on half the place, the yard was pretty darn scary. You really had to be careful because the lack of light in some areas made things very trecherous. One time when we were working there a guy was killed when he drove his heavy loader into the water because he couldn't see the edge of the pier he was working on.

Not pretty.

Yeah, very spooky sometimes.

I forgot to mention the rats. They only came out at night. Big ones.

Same here - I could never do that...and a similar thing happened to a teenage girl who worked in a local gas station. That's another job I'd never want to do.
