With a new box set, Genesis: 1970-1975, coming soon, the band is still holding out hope that perhaps original frontman Peter Gabriel will play some shows with them for old time's sake. Gabriel was actually the first to propose the idea of reuniting Genesis in 2004 when he wanted to do a handful of performances of the 1974 concept piece The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. He later backed off that idea in order to concentrate on a solo album, but it did lead to keyboardist Tony Banks, singer/drummer Phil Collins and bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford reuniting for a tour in 2007. "We've never said never about it," Banks told Billboard.com. "I know Phil would be quite happy with the idea of just playing the drums; it would be quite fun for him. Mike and I are certainly happy to do it. I know Steve [Hackett] is keen as well. I think it'd be down to Peter more than anyone else." "It would be fun to do something like that purely for the fun of working together again and seeing where it takes you," Rutherford added. Hackett said, "I think we should do this before one of us dies; we're not getting any younger, to quote one of the songs, so maybe one day it'll happen." The Genesis: 1970-1975 box set is a seven-CD and six-DVD affair that includes upgraded editions of all five albums the group recorded in those years, and each one has a DVD of performance footage and new interviews, as well as a set of rare extras. This will be the third in a series of boxed reissues. Genesis is also considering some further catalog reissues, including a possible box set of the group's live albums. As for Peter Gabriel, his song "Down To Earth" from the animated movie Wall-E was recently honored at the World Soundtrack Awards for Best Original Song written for a film. Gabriel performed the song, wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music with Thomas Newman. |

I hope it'll happen. I know some people who don't consider Genesis a full band without Peter Gabriel. It'll be interesting to see what happens...

It would be neat to see the five-man Genesis lineup at least do a one-off show. Gabriel was an amazing frontman for Genesis. The lineup with Peter on vocals and Phil on drums was definitely a different band than the Phil/Tony/Mike lineup.

I'm sure he'd come out of retirement to go behind the skins for a Genesis/Gabriel reunion.
