I was a little surprised that Thirston was so interested in Gilligan's little pocket knife. He actually had a possession that a billionaire coveted?!?!?
What is going on in that scene between Gilligan and Ginger?!?!?! It kind of amazed me that the "S" just stayed on the turtle. I can use reams of scotch tape and things still come apart! Poor Gilligan! ---having to eat seaweed and moss!! My husband noticed that, during the race, the Skipper calls his turtle an idiot! It's amazing that Maryann sells the vegetable garden to Thirston--weren't they for the castaways' food? And she knew that she couldn't give them to anyone unless Howell said it was OK. When food is potentially scarce, why would she do this--Howell wouldn't eat all of those carrots--they'd end up going to waste. For five thousand dollars? Everyone's food? |

Selling the garden also brings up another recurring point------what good is it to be a millionaire in a place without an economy and a population of 7 people? I could see saving the money to take with you if and when there is a rescue, but, on the island, Mr. Howell's money might as well be notebook paper.

The first season had a number of gentle character moments that were wonderful. In this episode we see Gilligan's tremendous understanding of the Skipper as he pleads with Mr. Howell to let him leave. He points out all the things that Howell has and then says, "And what has the Skipper got? Me. I know it's not much, but I'm all he's got. It would mean so much for him to win me back and so little for you to lose me." The humililty and compassion in those few words always chokes me up.
