New Shows Already Facing the Ratings Ax
Link
It sure is a rough, unforgiving world in Television Land. The fall season isn't even a month old and already Tinseltown analysts are taking odds on which shows are in hot water and might see cancelation before May. "The Hollywood Reporter" has made a list of shows on the bubble, the term for those that are teetering on the edge of being canceled due to low ratings. Just be aware that much can change in just a couple of weeks if ratings improve. Here's who is in trouble so far: "Opportunity Knocks" (ABC) - This new game show from producer Ashton Kutcher ("Punk'd") has been pulled from the schedule. "Variety" is reporting that it has been canceled. "Hole in the Wall" (Fox) - This game show, in which contestants contort their bodies through walls with oddly-shaped holes, is close to getting dunked itself. "Dirty Sexy Money" (ABC) - What started out as an intriguing drama about a lawyer (Peter Krause) who takes care of the estate of a wicked socialite family has turned into just another soap opera. "Pushing Daisies" (ABC) - The network's new darling fantasy series about a pie maker has been slipping in its sophomore year. In the past full Nielsen ratings, it was ranked 60th. But the next week, it gained a significant number of viewers. "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (Fox) - This science fiction series, which lost its traction about two-thirds of the way into its first season with a wayward storyline, drew only 5.4 million viewers, the same rating as "Daisies." Odds are this show, unlike the Terminator, will not be back. "The Ex-List" (CBS) - The series, based on an Israeli television show, is about a woman who is told by a psychic that the man she will marry is a former boyfriend. So she spends each episode going through her past relationships. Apparently, she should have spent that time looking for viewers. The fact the series might be in disarray after the creator already left over creative differences certainly doesn't help. "Life" (NBC) - Actually, I was puzzled on how this crime drama about a formerly imprisoned cop got renewed for a second season in the first place. It was ranked 58th in the past full ratings, which may confirm my suspicions. "Lipstick Jungle" (NBC) - The broadcast network version of "Sex and the City" (both shows share the same executive producer) may be proving that female viewers want all of the titillating language and sex, which a network show can't deliver. "Everybody Hates Chris" (CW) - Though this sitcom loosely based on Chris Rock's youth has been languishing somewhat in the ratings, I would imagine the network will be working hard to keep this critically acclaimed series. "The Game" (CW) - To give you an idea of how poorly this veteran sitcom is doing, a rerun of "Gossip Girl" on the same network had better ratings the same week as a new episode of "The Game." |

I hope the ratings for Pushing Daisies continue to climb. The show is great. There is nothing else like it on TV right now. We need originality!

DSM just needs to crawl somewhere and die. I'm sick of the insults to "Dynasty" by comparing DSM to it.

I don't care for DSM. I like "adult" shows about families such as Brothers And Sisters, but unlike B&S, there's nothing redeeming about any of the members of the family in DSM, whereas no matter how different the five siblings are on B&S, they're all good characters and you like all of them. Can't say the same for DSM.

Yeah, they should have made it into a movie. I can see that being a really funny movie that you go to that isn't like a good quality movie but just something funny.
I think the problem with a lot of TV shows today is the people who are creating them (unless it is a game show) they might be making a plot that should be used for a movie and instead making it a tv show. Some plot ideas might be great but for a movie and not a tv show. I think the creators are just trying to create tv shows sometimes even though their original idea would better fit that of a movie. |

DSM has always looked ridiculous to me. Like a trashy version of 80s Nighttime soaps. Plus, I hate that title. Utterly craptastic.

It's a horrible title indeed. They're trying too hard to push their desired image. Once upon a time, I loved "Desperate Housewives" to death, but even then I loathed the title with a passion. Way too sensational. Simply naming the show after its setting or part of its setting is extremely effective (off the top of my head..."Peyton Place," "Dallas," "Knots Landing," "Flamingo Road," "Falcon Crest," "Beverly Hills 90210," "Melrose Place," even "The OC" and "One Tree Hill" have the right idea).
Personally, I cringe whenever any of the current shows are compared to the likes of "Dallas" and "Dynasty" (as in "the next" or "the *insert* of our generation" or "a modern version of"). There's a drastic difference. "Dallas" and "Dynasty" took themselves seriously and that's like 50% of the enjoyment there. DSM is a freaking caricature through and through, so to say that it's a modern version of the older shows is ridiculous. Blasphemy in the churches of David Jacobs, Aaron Spelling, and Lorimar Television, I say! |
