Angry please do not abuse your car horn

seriously, they're to be used when you're trying to get the attention of someone who is causing an inconvenience. don't make false alarms just for the lulz of making noise. yesterday i was a four-way stop and the other two cars there just started honking over and over. i didn't know what the hell was going on, i thought they were targeting the honks at me like i was doing something wrong, and i was scared to proceed. turned out they were just greeting each other. there should be some mild penalty for that kind of behavior if there isn't already.

LOL - at first I pictured someone putting out their cigarettes on the car horn or something!

I know what you mean - especially in rush hour traffic. It's not social hour people!!

At least you don't hear wedding processions doing it much anymore. Used to be on a Saturday you could barely hear yourself think during the day - they're would be so many weddings on and everyone honking their horns all day long.

I just wish the guy next door to me would figure out the damned alarm on his contractor's truck. Everytime he gets in or out of the thing the alarm starts sounding his horn. (the very reason I have a visual alarm system on the car and not one with sound or I'd probably be doing the same thing all the time)!

I have a tendancy to honk at people who cut me off or something but I cannot stand when people just repeatedly honk their horns. Even if I'm at a red light and it turns green and the person in front of me doesn't move, I'll wait for a few seconds before honking at them.

The only time you should use your car horn is when you find out your brakes don't work!!! I seriously can't stand the noise either.

I'll honk my horn if I'm really angry because some jerk has just totally come along and cut me off, or I'll honk it if I'm in somebody's blind spot and they're about to change lanes and I'll get my arse killed if I don't make some noise, but other than that I don't make a habit of using my horn. I don't mean at all to make fun of what you're trying to say. You make a good point that people shouldn't abuse their car horns, but this reminds me of the funniest thing my dad did when he was alive. One time when I was a girl, it was nighttime and we were going home and somebody cut him off. My dad was an ex-Army drill sergeant...you didn't do that to my dad! It was one of the funniest things, in my opinion anyway, that he ever did...he honked out the letters f and u in Morse code! Perhaps Dad was a little hot under the collar that night but you've got to give him points for creativity...not too many people think to use their horns for Morse code, LOL! I laugh about that one until cry to this day! I lost a wonderful man last December.

Mrs.G - your dad sounds a lot like my dad was! I know what you mean about missing them and smiling whenever you think of some of the stuff they did.

Yup. My father was quite the character. He had the most amazing sense of humor. He was so funny, and he was also the most stubborn soul you'd probably ever meet. I don't know how to describe it, but my father had this presence...you KNEW when my dad was in the room! In spite of all his health complications, he was so full of humor and life and mischief. And he could be really tough whenever he had to be, but usually, he was very gentle and kind and sweet. The thing about my dad was, you had to give him a chance. You had to sit down with him and get to know him, but once you did, you had a friend for life. Anyway, sorry safety pin. I know this is your thread about car horns. I just got started on memory lane and couldn't help myself. I'll hush now so we can get back to the horns!

I promise Sarah - this is the last off topic.

It sounds like we had the same father. Mine was a Taurus and as stubborn as they can get, but what a heart and so intelligent and funny. He had a long fuse, but when it went, get out of the way! He was in the army too and had that tough but fair mentality. Sometime we'll have to start another thread about them. Got some funny stories to share. I'm so glad I got my warped sense of humour from him.

Definitely sounds like we had the same dad! That's a great idea. We do need to start a thread and dedicate it to our fathers' funny stories and things.

I hate it when I'm stopped at a red light, right tern on red; and I'm waiting for the right time to proceed and the guy behind me honks at me.

I realize I can be overly careful occasionally, but I have the right to stay where it's safe for as long as I need, and you needn't be concerned about when you think I should have gone. You don't need to be in such a hurry to get to the next red light.

I'm sorry to hear that. Losing a parent is so hard... Your dad sounds like he was hilarious, like my dad was. I laughed when I read that about the morse code! Wonder if the other driver "got it"!?
