Default When people say the world is ending in 2012

I can't help but laugh.
It's obviously going to end just like it ended in 2000 and whatever other date they said it'd end in the past.

They get this idea because the Mayan calendar ended that year and marked the end of an era.
But the end of an era does not mean the end of the human race, and it also doesn't mean that an era to them has any affect over time for us.

If the world is going to end, it isn't going to be for that reason. It honestly amuses me what stupid things people believe sincerely.

"New Age", yes -- but a very Christian new age.

Doom and gloom combined with excessive Bible reading play a part as well in the whole mindset. You'd think the good Christians would concentrate on good works and leave the cosmology to the Almighty.

But it's based off the idea that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, nothing to do with Christianity.

Yes, of course. But the popularity of this talk owes a lot to latent Christianity even among the neopagans -- and the constant expectation of the Apocalypse among the more radical evangelicals.

My dad is a devoted Christian and he says that the end of time has no defined date, and that it'll happen in a split second and could happen at any time. That's what the Bible says so I don't see how any Christian could buy into the 2012 idea.

Off the subject but who is that in your avatar Vtunie? It looks like Conan O'Brien

Oh gee thanks for pulling us off all the gloom and doom...

It's G. Feydeau, the nineteenth-century French playwright of bedroom farces (see my profile for why I chose him....)

I'm saying that even the neopagans that do buy into the 2012 idea grew up in an essentially Christian culture and probably in a once-Christian family.

And before the New Age got into the act, predictions of the end of the world were a specialty of various Christian or near-Christian sects.

And apparently a lot of Christians today do expect to see the rapture in their lifetimes, though not necessarily in 2012 specifically.

So it all ties in. I would never seek a quarrel with your beliefs or those of your family -- or anyone else for that matter.

I know you're not seeking a quarrel
I just thought I'd bring up this subject in a thread here to get everyone's opinions.

I've been thinking about all of these things a lot recently. I'm starting to question what I believe in and it's natural for me to be worried about the world ending.

My best friend was convinced that the world was going to end on May 15th this year just because she had recurring nightmares about it.

It seems like every year there's a new "the world is going to end" scare. Are people really that insane??

It's like the whole Y2K thing back in 2000. People overthought the subject, and the government got involved and started scaring people - what a fiasco that was

It was suppose to end on 6-6-96 as well. After that didn't happen, it was apparantely going to end on 6-6-2006. I think some people just try to find ways to entertain themselves, and predicting the worlds end is there way of doing it. Truth is, only God knows when the world as we know it will end. I say as we know it only because in my beliefs, the world never truly ends, it just ends as we currently know it.

I'm a New Ager but I don't believe the world is going to end in 2012.

I do think it's possible that an important event might happen in that year though.

The New Age beliefs are really cool, I'm glad I got into them. One aspect of the New Age stuff I'm most interested in is astral projection, which is the ability to consciously leave your body and get onto the astral plane. We all do this unconsciously while we are asleep but I want to learn to do it consciously so I can remember the experience.

I also attend a spiritualist church, which isn't really New Age but there are some similarities with the belief systems. I'd also like to become a medium at some stage.

New Age rocks! I might start a thread to see if there are any more New Agers around here.
