I know that the ratings were #6 in the first season Phyllis, but what were they in the 2nd season. How bad were the ratings, that they had to cancel what could have been a classic sitcom?

Hey, only two years to get a reply....
Don't know exactly what they were, but the show was not even in the top 20 the next year (according to Alex McNeil's "Total Television," 2nd edition, 1984). |

Well i'm not a Phyllis fan but maybe you can tell me if these changes at the beginning of the 76-77 season was the wrong move. According to TV Guide Fall of 1976 Preview, The changes that were made was Phyllis going to work for the San francisco Board of Supervisors, which teamed her up with 3 new regulars. Was that the reason? |

"Rhoda" and "Phyllis" were up against "Little House on the Prairie" in the fall of 1976. That may be why the ratings fell.

"Phyllis" finished as the number 40 show of the 76-77 season. It was indeed hurt by the job change (despite some fine actors), inconsistant writing and a softening of the Phyllis Lindstrom edge. It still had several excellent episodes, and should have been given another chance, as "Rhoda" was given (if I remember correctly, "Rhoda" finished in the mid to lower 30's of the Neilson's that year). However, with the death of yet two more cast members (the very popular Judith Lowry and also, Burt Mustin) "Phyllis" was given the axe. The addition of Craig Wasson as Bess' slightly scraggly husband, failed to bring the youth demographics desired. The show did end with a very funny final episode, "And Baby Makes Six".
With the release of "Rhoda" on dvd, I feel that all of us who liked "Phyllis" should go to the Shout!Factory message boards, and ask for it's dvd release. Even those who were not enamored of it, will likely find things to enjoy (Mother Dexter was indeed a riot), not to mention the two guest spots by Mary Tyler Moore as our beloved Mary Richards. www.shoutfactory.com |

I think it's a slim chance for shows who didn't produce enough eps for syndication to appear on DVD. I consider Phyllis the SPINOFF STEP CHILD of Mary Tyler Moore |

There is ZERO doubt in my mind that "Phyllis" will be released to dvd. Like "Rhoda", it's just a matter of time.
