Clown Episode? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I am a huge fan of The Dick Van Dyke show. I grew up on reruns. My folks always talked about an episode where Rob had to give a eulogy for a clown and that it was considered the funniest episode in TV History. Now I know Mary Tyler Moore did an episode similar, but did Dick Van Dyke do one previous? If so, did it get "sealed away?" Even better... has anyone actually seen it if it does exist?

I'm almost 100% positive a Dick Van Dyke episode never showed Rob giving a eulogy to a clown. However, in the episode Happy Birthday and Too Many More Rob dresses up as a clown for Richie's birthday and in real life Dick Van Dyke did the eulogy at Stan Laurel's funeral.

^ Yeah, I've seen every episode over the years of The DVD Show, and I am alomst 100% positive too that they didn't do that. On Mary Tyler Moore she was at a clown funeral...but she didn't give the eulogy. Rob played a clown, Mary went to a clown's funeral, but no episode with that.

They might be thinking of that MTM episode where Mary couldn't stop laughing during the eulogy for a clown. I heard or read that the episode was one of the funniest of its time.

yea, I don't remenbere ever seeing an episode like that, and I too watched the reruns all the time growing up. I now own almost the complete series on DVD, and I've read a lot of stuff about it; and I've never heard about the existince of a "lost" episode.
Like the last poster said; your parents might be thinking of the episode of "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW" called "Chuckles bites the dust".

I own the complete series of The Dick Van Dyke Show on DVD. I've watched every episode and Rob Petrie never eulagized a clown. I agree with others who are suggesting there is some confusion with the Chuckles the Clown episode of MTMS.

You're not thinking of the reunion special from a couple of years ago, are you? I think Rob had to write a eulogy for Alan Brady, who wasn't dead yet.
