Dred Scott was the subject of one of the most famous court cases in American history. He was a slave who escaped and made his way to St. Louis, where he and his wife filed a lawsuit in a bid to obtain their freedom. The court battle lasted for 11 years, and went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decided that Scott should remain a slave. This decision contributed to rising tensions between the free states and slave states, and pushed the country closer to the American Civil War.
