In recent years, this is something that has become sadly commonplace on television. Stations that will air highly rated crap that might attract remote flippers over lesser-rated programming that will keep 2-3 million watchers. You see it all the time on television, but elsewhere as well. Would you rather have 2.5 million loyal happy Nick At Nite or TV Land viewers airing classic shows that have a huge following, but might not "pack them in" the way an overplayed Cosby or Fresh Prince rerun does, or 3.5 million who'll turn to Fresh Prince, then turn it to the next station while all of the former fans of the network think the network has become a wastland? MTV is the same way, they air all of that reality crap because it brings in ratings, even tho the M in MTV means music and they couldn't have deviated further from their mission statement (in contrast, ESPN could do reality shows but instead keep it to sports)?
So what do you think is better, quality or quantity? |

Quality, definitely. You could have 100 builders, but all of them might have a body part missing like their hands, which are essential and needed for their job, or no brains lol.

I hate it when networks go through identity crises and sell out. It's like saying, "we don't care about our loyal viewers, these other shows bring in more ratings" no matter if they fit the network or not. Just because you're not #1 doesn't always mean you're failing.

this crap happens on radio too, which is a reason I can't listen to it anymore... the same tired songs because they "test" better, so they take no risks.
With that, there is one local "oldies" (well, it actually goes up to the mid-1980's and back to the late 50's) station in Louisville called WAKY which was an old Louisville station in the day, then went under, but went back into commission about a year ago, and unlike most oldies stations, this one is done with love for the fans, not just the person who might hear a familiar Beach Boys song and listen to the duration of that three minutes. It's the only radio station I can stomach listening to when driving or whatever because it plays nothing but songs that the original WAKY played from 1959-1986 (the years it was active) and instead of just playing the same songs, it digs deeper into an artists back catalog than the typical oldies stations in the area do. For example, I heard "Add Some Music To Your Day" by the Beach Boys on there a few weeks ago, a song that is considered one of their gems, but didn't chart high and you'd never hear it on the other oldies station in town. Same with a lot of the other legendary artists, and not just that, the station plays little known songs/artists that were hits at the time but forgotten now, such as "You Don't Want Me Anymore" by Steel Breeze, which was a top 20 hit in 1982 but pretty forgotten today, and it's the only station I've ever heard Ringo Starr on. The station is run by the people for the fans, instead of trying to win a few peak hour listeners by playing an overplayed Supremes song that you heard two days ago on there. I wish more radio stations would take that mentality up. |
