This thread is for everyone to pick a movie DVD, a television DVD, a book and a CD that you think others would really enjoy. Make sure that you gave a reason why you are making this recommendation.

1. Movie DVD:
88 Minutes (2008)
Released in DVD three weeks ago, this is an exciting and suspenseful action packed thriller starring the great Al Pacino. Pacino plays a criminal psychologist who has only 88 minutes to prevent his own murder. The movie will keep you guessing until the very end and, of course, Pacino is great as always.

2. Televison DVD:
Family Ties - the Complete Fourth Season (2006)
Released on August 5th, this was the season of Family Ties that aired right after Michael J. Fox became a superstar in Back to the Future in 1985. This is also quite probably the best season of the series. It is the season where Alex meets Ellen and Mallory meets Nick.

3. Book:
1776 by David McCullogh (2005)
Historian David McCullogh is known for his best selling book on founding father and our second president, John Adams. In this Pulitzer Prize winner, McCullogh gives us a detalied look at the year 1776 on the battlefiled from both the American and Engish perspectives.

4. CD:
Nabraska - Bruce Springsteen (1982)
One of the darkest and most downbeat albums ever recorded. Bruce recorded this album in his bedroom on a four track recorder and it is nothing more than vocal, accustic guitar and harmonica. And that is exactly the way it should have been. This album explores the dark side of the American dream from the perspective of a serial killer ("Nabraska"), a man who gets involved with the mob to pay off his debts ("Atlantic City"), a convicted murderer ("Johnny 99") among others. This album really gives an insightful look at the dark side of human nature, and how some people get there.

Movie:
Beyond The Valley of the Dolls. You will never see anything like this. An all girl rock trio head to L.A. for the big time and get mixed up with sex, drugs and violence. Every music clichie is thrown in. Roger Ebert wrote the screenplay and Russ Meyer directed it. Totally wild!!!!!!!!!!!!


TV Show:
Shindig It ran on ABC from September 1964 to February 1966. Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and Otis Redding were the only major artists never to do this show, but it got nearly everyone else. Most of the time the performances were live too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CD:
One Kiss Can Lead To Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found The big names from that genre and their lesser known greats. Will set you back some cash but worth every penny

Book:
The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequlity In Detroit Tells the story of racial turmoil in the Motor city and what events lead to the 1967 riots. In a lot of ways Detroit was like a southern city.

MOVIES: 'SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY' (1946) - Starring John Payne & Maureen O'Hara. It was the second out of 4 movies they did together and in my opinion the best. Although its little known and has seen neither a dvd or vhs release, its often played on Fox Movie Channel and has fallen into public domain and can be purchased on ebay for around $10. I guess it could be considered a"chick flick" or "tearjerker" although this was made way back before that became cliche. Yet its still a very sweet movie with great acting and a touching storyline. John Payne in my opinion is a very underrated actor. He exudes charm on screen and his acting is effortless, there are some scenes where his perforance pulls at your heartstrings. Maureen plays against type as her character is very sweet and demure. Anyway the movie is about Julie (O'Hara) who adopts an orphan, Hittie, much to Bill's (Payne) reluctancy. After adopting the child, Julie dies of a sudden heart attack (as result of a condition she had all along but kept from Bill) and Bill is left to raise the child whom a. he never really wanted and b. finds it difficult to relate to her through his grieving and the fact that she has an overactive imagination that Bill can't tolerate or understand. However, through Julie's "divine" intervention from beyond, she finds a way for them to connect.

Another great movie is 'GREEN FOR DANGER' (1946) starring Alastair Sim. Its a British mystery film and is filled with humor throughout. It involves 2 suspicious deaths at a military hospital in the midst of WW2 in which Inspector Cockrill (Sim) is sent to investigate the staff who all have their own reasons for wanting the victims dead. Its a fun whodunit, thats fast paced and light thanks to Sim's unorthodox and offbeat investigating skills and leaves you wanting more.

TV: NURSES (1991-1994) - a show that lasted 3 seasons on NBC that was a spinoff from 'The Golden Girls' and 'Empty Nest', yet seems to be aimed at a much younger audience. Its set in the same hospital as Harry Weston works which leads to many crossovers by Carol, Harry, Laverne, Charlie, Sophia, Blanche, Rose and even Dreyfuss. Although, the show saw cast changes every season, the 1st and 2nd seasons were the very best!It was truly an ensemble cast as all the characters had very different personalities, the writing was very witty and it had the makings of a true classic. I liken it to Night Court being set in a hospital. There was always a host of zany patients coming through similar to how Night Court always had different defendants. Also the cast was made up of virtual unknowns which made it no ones show in particular so everyone was able to be showcased. If anything buy the the first 2 seasons on ioffer or sell.com, its truly worth it.
