Default KIRK CAMERON'S BORN-AGAIN GIG

"THAT guy . . ." Kirk Cameron is shaking his head. "He's a bright man. It's just a shame."

Cameron has just learned, via The Post, that he was a bit player in the original cut of Bill Maher's documentary "Religulous"(see review). The clip in the film was from Cameron's Christian show, "The Way of the Master," and features the former teen idol talking about "circumventing people's logic" in order to bring them to Jesus.

"Yeah, I see what he did there," Cameron, 37, says with a Mike Seaver-reminiscent smile. "That sounds like what he'd do."

The actor - who says he doesn't think he'd want to see "Religulous," thanks very much - is busy promoting his own underdog of a film right now.

"Fireproof," made on a shoestring budget with a cast of church volunteers, stars Cameron as a firefighter who learns to be a good husband, via a book called "The Love Dare." Each of its chapters - you guessed it - begins with a quote from the Bible.

In a development which surely wouldn't surprise a cynic like Maher, both ticket sales for the film and pre-sales of the book are wildly surpassing expectations, as Christians all over the country snap them up like hotcakes.

"Fireproof" made $6.8 million its opening weekend, putting it in the No. 4 spot at the box office. Not bad for a film in which none of the cast got paid.

The movie's par for the course for Cameron, who left stardom behind after his turn on '80s sitcom "Growing Pains." He found Jesus, married co-star Chelsea Noble and raised a family of six kids.

Now, he's a full-fledged evangelist, co-hosting a show in which he goes out on the street to talk up God and talk down evolution. He and co-host Ray Comfort have used a banana as evidence of intelligent design (the fruit fits nicely into the human hand, therefore it must have been made for that express purpose).

But say what you will about Cameron's anti-science claims, he's living proof that a child star does not have to morph into a drug-addled mess. He's a genuinely nice guy who practices what he (literally) preaches.

"People can say what they want to say about me," he shrugs, "but in the end, I'm happily married, I've got a great family, and I've got an exciting career, with this new movie. [Christianity] hasn't really hurt me, professionally, and personally, it drives me to be who I am."

When he's not making Jesus-themed films (he also starred in the cheesily apocalyptic "Left Behind" trilogy) or his own show, Cameron runs Camp Firefly, a weeklong summer camp for terminally ill kids. He and his wife have been running it - personally - since 1989. "We were meeting kids through the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and we wanted to do something more than just sign autographs," Cameron explains.

As for Maher, the actor hasn't yet had a chance to debate the "Real Time" host. "I haven't crossed paths with him," Cameron says. "But you know, God willing, we might one day."

Are you listening, Bill?

I'd love to see the two of them debate.I'm no fan of either of them but I think Bill would win by a long shot.
