Default Eye Exam

I had to have an eye exam today. It had been three years, and lately I have been bothered with seeing
large dark spots from time to time and frequent severe headaches. My optician found two things, both of
which are common with people as they age: the beginning of cataracts forming and (the main cause of
the spots) a condition called Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD). The latter can also be caused by
a head trauma or a fall.

I haven't had any recent head injuries, though. (Come to think of it, I did injure my head while I was
working at Wal-Mart. But that was over a year ago, when I bumped my head on a clothes rack. It
caused some bleeding, but my family physician said it was just a superficial wound. So, I think the eye condtion
is just a result of aging.)

My optician didn't prescribe a new eyeglass prescription. He just wants me to watch out for any of these
signs: flashing lights, a "curtain or veil" over my vision or lots of dots. If I start seeing any of those, I
need to visit him immediately. Otherwise, I just need to be seen six weeks from now to make sure
there is no neovasuclarization (new blood vessel formation) or retinal breaks in my eyes.

The test for glaucoma is part of the routine eye exam there; so, if it were
present, I'm sure he would have mentioned it. His diagnosis revealed just
vitreous detachment and vitreous floaters and nuclear sclerotic cataract.

Is there any special treatment for it? Hope everything goes well for you.

No, not really. It's just an annoyance that I will have to put up with. I just
hope that it doesn't get worse.

I try to go in for an eye exam at least every 1 1/2-2 years. I just had one today and everything went very well. Poor eyesight runs on both sides of my family, so it's important to me to make regular eye exams. Keep us updated, tv star collector - God be with you!!

Yes, I get eye exams about every two years myself (my last one was on December 10, 2007). Except for a puff that shoots you in the eye like a gun, I usually don't have problems during these appointments.

I remember that puff. Come to think of it, they didn't do that this time.

If the floaters ie: cataracts get larger and/or thicker they can negatively affect your vision. The floaters/cataracts can form what's called a "blind spot". I hope things get better for you.
Yeah. He did put drops in my eyes, and afterwards he shined a bright light in
them. That was my least favorite part of the exam. I saw spots for a long
time after that, including the drive home. Fortunately, I didn't have to drive
very far.

Oh man, I hate that thing. I always dread it.
