Paul Newman marathon set for Sunday on Turner Classic Movies

Turner Classic Movies will begin a 24-tribute to Cleveland Heights native Paul Newman at 6 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12. Newman, who grew up in Shaker Heights and attended Kenyon College, died Friday, Sept. 26, at 83. The schedule of 11 films: 6 a.m.: "The Rack" (1956) -- Newman as a Korean War veteran on trial for treason (from Rod Serling's teleplay). 8 a.m.: "Until They Sail" (1957) -- Newman as a Marine captain who falls for a widow played by Jean Simmons. 10 a.m.: "Torn Curtain" (1966) -- Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this thriller teams Newman with Julie Andrews. 12:15 p.m.: "Exodus" (1960) -- Newman is an Israeli resistance fighter in director Otto Preminger's adaptation of the Leon Uris book. 3:45 p.m.: "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1962) -- Newman reprises his Broadway role in the drama by Tennessee Williams. 6 p.m.: "Hud" (1963) -- Patricia Neal and Melvyn Douglas won Oscars for this film version of Larry McMurtry's story about a selfish young man (Newman). 8 p.m.: "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956) -- Newman's breakthrough role was in director Robert Wise's film biography of middleweight boxer Rocky Graziano. 10 p.m.: "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) -- Newman is the anti-establishment free-spirit sentenced to a prison chain gang. 12:15 a.m. "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958) -- Newman is Brick to Elizabeth Taylor's Maggie and Burl Ives' Big Daddy in this adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play. 2:15 a.m.: "Rachel, Rachel" (1968) -- Newman co-stars with his wife, Joanne Woodward. He also directed this story of a spinster struggling to come out of her shell. 4 a.m. "The Outrage" (1964) -- Newman plays a Mexican bandit accused of rape. |

Thanks for posting this. I figured a station or two would be running a marathon. I can't wait - just got a new LCD HD also, so I'll get the popcorn and stock up the fridge.
Also, Broadway is dimming their lights this Friday evening at 8 pm. If any of our New Yorkers might be down that way, it would be great if you could get a pic of it and post here. I've never seen that and wonder what it looks like when they dim them in honour of someone. Rest peacefully Paul (although knowing him, he'd rather be going 200mph behind the wheel).
