TV Thoughts on the 60th Annual Emmy Awards

I'm surprised that more people haven't posted their thoughts on the Emmys, although maybe a lot of people didn't watch. I usually don't but I took a chance this year. Actually I watched them twice because I watched it a second time with my husband.

So here are my thoughts on this year's show:

Misc Moments

The opening clips with people rattling off famous TV lines was pretty funny. Especially Charlie Sheen and John Cryer doing the "I'm Darryl, This is my brother, Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl" thing.

The contest that they had on the Emmy website to pick a favorite scene. Did they even mention who won? I noticed they showed the clip from Seinfeld (ironically called "The Contest"), but they didn't show any of the others, like "I Love Lucy" and "Murphy Brown". So should I assume that Seinfeld won? In all honesty, if that's true it really surprises me! I thought that "I Love Lucy" would win by a landslide!

Josh Gorban singing the theme songs was entertaining. He did a good job with some of those; especially the South Park one. I think they should have used songs from older shows, although they did use Happy Days.

Oprah Winfrey-didn't like her opening segment. Kind of boring after a while Too melodramatic for me.

Ricky Gervais-I'd never heard of him before but that segment where he accused Steve Carrell of keeping his Emmy from last year was hilarious! At first I thought that Steve Carrell had no sense of humor because he sat there with such a straight face (now THAT'S good acting), but the second time I watched it, it was kind of obvious that it was a staged thing. It was pretty funny, though. I loved when Ricky said "I sat through Evan Almighty!" His tips on giving Emmy acceptance speeches were pretty funny! "Don't cry. It's just an award".

Winners

Jeremy Piven winning for "Entourage": I really like him, although I've never seen the show. I was curious about one thing... did he drop his Emmy when he was on stage? I saw him bend down and it looked like he was picking something up off the ground. I didn't know that Kevin Dillon was in that show as well. I don't have HBO, so I'm going to rent some of these.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED that Mad Men won for Best Drama! I love that show and they so deserved it!

Laura Linney-winning for "John Adams": I liked her speech the best. Especially when she said that she would thank all the people personally instead of while she was on the stage. I've never heard anyone say that before. It was nice to hear.

The funniest moment was when Tom Hanks won his award for John Adams. I was ROFLMAO when he kissed Sally Field and she asked him if he had been a good boy. Then he said "Yes, Mom; I've been fine." That was hysterical! I didn't get it at first but then I remembered that she played his mom in "Forest Gump".

"John Adams" won so many awards that I'm really anxious to see it. I had no idea that Tom Hanks produced it! Cool!

Alec Baldwin beating out Tony Shalhoub for Best Actor was just wrong, IMO. I didn't think Tony had even been nominated this year until I saw his name in the nominees! I know, I know... Tony has won several times, but I think he deserves every Emmy he wins! At least Tony didn't wear those nerdy-looking glasses! Alec Baldwin reminded me of when he was in "Beetlejuice"

I don't know if any of you have seen "Breaking Bad" but it's a pretty good show. I didn't like it at first, but it's kind of grown on me. I was happy to see that Brian Cranston won his first Emmy for that show.

The Laugh-In tribute was pretty good. I wish they would have shown close-ups of the stars, but it was nice to see some familiar faces. Loved how they did the same set up as they had on the show.

In the audience:

Kyra Sedgewick and Kevin Bacon looked wonderful. I love both of them and would love it if Kevin did a guest role on her show! They are such a cute couple!

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. As much as I love Tom, he looked so goofy in those glasses. But Rita? Wow, she looked gorgeous! They are a great couple, too!

Others I noticed:

Dennis Leary-wow, he looked great!
Julia Louis Dreyfus-didn't really care for the dress she had on.

Commercials:

I absolutely LOVED the Macy's commercial with all the TV and movie clips! That was great! Of course, anything with a clip from Seinfeld becomes an instant favorite with me! But they also showed "I Love Lucy", "Miracle On 34th St", a clip from an Orson Wells movie and a clip from a Peanuts cartoon featuring Snoopy. There were other things too, but it made for a wonderful commerical. I bet that gets a lot of airplay during this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!

The other one that I loved was the Amex one with Tina Fey and Martin Scorsesse. That was hilarious! I almost hate to say anything about it because it's funnier to see it firsthand. But it takes place in an airport.

One rant that I must address here:

When they did the list of passages , I was so that Stanley Kammel (of Monk) wasn't even mentioned! He's not a huge star, but a lot of those mentioned were writers and directors. I'm sorry to harp on Stanley so much, but I have seen them mention people who were barely noticed. That was horrible of them to not mention him. At first I thought maybe they were doing people that passed away last year, but then I saw Bernie Mack's picture. I honestly think (or hope anyway) that if Tony Shalhoub had won for Monk that he would have said something about Stanley in his acceptance speech. Stanley seems to be very under appreciated. And that's a shame. He was an amazing actor and in the words of Tony Shalhoub; "I miss him terribly".

All in all, the show was okay. It had it's moments, but I was expecting more for a 60th anniversary special.

So for those who watched, what did you think?

Andrea
