What happened to Rusty, the child on Make Room for Daddy. Is he still in Show Business?

Rusty Hamer unfortunately committed suicide in 1990. When the show ended its run he didn't continue in show business as he probably had hoped. He should have gone on to college. Danny Thomas was going to foot the bill but Rusty wasn't very academic I guess. Too bad since he could have become another Ron Howard who also out grew Opie.
