Default The Tyler Perry movies

Anyone here a fan of his movies? I am, and I will admit, I was a little skeptical on some of his movies like "Diary Of a mad Black Woman" I saw "Meet the Browns" earlier this year, and I saw "The Family that Preys" this week, and I will admit, these are some excellent movies. So well written. Tyler Perry is definitely on his way. In this month's Ebony magazine, it states how he built his billion dollar empire. It's only a matter of time before he has some clout in Hollywood. But I do recommend his movies.

i love everything Tyler puts out. be it plays, TV shows, movies or books. he is inspirational and funny. Mabel "Madea" Simmons is one of my favorite characters. lol. kind of like Thelma "Mama" Harper from "Mama's Family."
i have yet to see "The Family That Preys" but would like to one day, Lord willing.
he's making (or made. heard the trailer was in the coming attraction of "Preys") a movie version of his play "Madea goes to jail", which should be hilarious.

His movies have that "Tyler Perry Formula"--which isn't bad per se, but most of them have struggling women with abusive husbands/boyfriends, who meets a man with a heart of gold. Box office wise they all seem to peter out once the films make the $50 million mark. I keep waiting for the one that actually breaks out and crosses the $100 million mark. Maybe the next Madea film will do that.

I like the movies I've seen, but it does seem like every movie has a heartless bastard who abuses the films' heroine who in turn meets an average joe who is a good person. He even worked this into Why Did I Get Married

I saw The Family That Preys tonight, and I was surprised that it was actually good. I didn't know how Kathy Bates would fit, but she was great.

I personally would say that Tyler Perry has already made the big time and is on top of his game. He is probably the biggest African-American director we have right now, and not only that, he's become a bit of a name-brand and he's done it all on his own without anyone else. He's got a message but he's not trying to alienate any moviegoers (whereas there are people who won't go to Spike Lee movies for instance), he's just being true to himself and making movies for himself and his fans.

He is calling his own shots, has a second sitcom ordered by TBS, and keeps control of his work. Why would he go "all Hollywood" and lose that? I still think it would be nice for a film of his to break through that hit "100 million" phase. His movies always have a nice moral message as well.

Whenever I see the name Tyler Perry I think of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from Aerosmith.

I've seen all of his movies and i like them. My favorites are Why Did I Get Married and The Family That Preys. I like his House Of Payne tv show too. His Madea character cracks me up. I read about his life in Ebony magazine. He said he was abused as a child and he was homeless before he started doing movies and stage plays. I'm glad to see he changed his life around. His story should be a good example for homeless people to wanna change their lives. For some reason i tend to think that most homeless people act like they're helpless and they can't change but they can change. You have to wanna make a change and unfortunately a lot of homeless people don't wanna change. I read that Tyler is gonna have a Meet The Browns tv show that was just like the movie. That should be interesting. Tyler said he doesn't wanna go Hollywood and chase after movie studios. That's a good thing.

I just happen to catch 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' on a pay channel while staying in a hotel room, and was surprised how good & funny it was. I've been meaning to check out his other movies, too!

Love his work. If you haven't seen his stage plays (available on DVD at most outlets like Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, etc) check them out. The Madea character is like a cross between Mama of Mama's Family and Fred Sanford. The plays "Family Reunion" and "Madea Goes to Jail" are beyong hilarious, and they have a good message too. Recently saw his movie "Meet the Browns" and it was excellent. The end set up for another Madea movie - "Madea Goes to Jail" and it looks like it'll be very funny. Perry is a talented filmmaker and seems like a gentleman.

Not a Tyler Perry fan.

I agree that most of his movies generally have recurring theme of women who are mentally/physically abused by their male counterparts, and later encounter a "good man" with a big heart to offer (if nothing else).

I wish current Black American (oriented) comedy films possessed the sophistication as seen in previous movies of the early 90s such as, Boomerang.
