Considering how almost everything on the show happened within the Tanner house, I think they did a good job with coming up with four seasons. You can also tell, that the quality of the episodes declined a bit in the end of the show's run run.

It's probably like what happened with Joan of Arcadia. They filmed the second season and left a lot of things open-ended. Then the show got canceled. I didn't know that Alf had been on for four seasons, although I watched it occasionally. That's too bad that it ended with a cliff-hanger. However, that would make for some awesome fan fiction if you are so inclined! You could end it any way you want to!

I remember I seeing the ALF finale when I was little. I didn't understand that it was a really cliffhanger. But I remember my older siblings being upset at the ending.

Default **** SPOILER ALERT ****

If you do not want to know how ALF ends, please do not read any further as the ending is revealed below....

The question of a cliffhanger has come up on the shows finale. While the viewer was left with questions there was no suggestion of a cliffhanger...

****** SPOILER ALERT ******

Alf is seen in Willies garage playing with his radio equipment when he receives a message from his people. We then see a U.S. Alien Tracking facility where the same message has been intercepted and decoded. After talking with his adoptive family, ALF decides to return to his own kind on a new planet they bought. The Tanners through a going away party for ALF where he is given some presents including a small piece of wood from the roof his space craft crashed through. The Tanners drive ALF to the designated place although the U.S. government team has been waiting unbeknown to them. As a bright light from the alien craft shines on ALF standing alone in a field, the government force closes in and captures him. The Tanner family does not prevent this from happening as there was little they could have done.
