Why didn't the writers just say $105 or $100?

And furthermore, what kind of money was James making not to be able to afford $26 a week?

Well, if they werent getting assistance, groceries were probably expensive. They are really high in Chicago. Not to mention shoes, clothing, phone bill, doctor bills, J.J.'s art supplies, extra groceries for when Thelma cooked and they were still hungry, lol...

I know Florida made some of their clothes.
