Default 'Brokeback Mountain' Author Slams Movie's Fans

The author who inspired Oscar-winning movie Brokeback Mountain has come under scrutiny from film fans.

Annie Proulx claims she has been pestered by fans following the release of the 2005 movie - starring late actor Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal - which was based on her short story of the same name. The writer insists the tale has become "the source of constant irritation in my private life" because she is harassed by people offering their reinterpretations of the tale.

She says, "There are countless people out there who think the story is open range to explore their fantasies and to correct what they see as an unbearably disappointing story. They constantly send ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites of the story to me, expecting me to reply with praise and applause for 'fixing' the story. They certainly don't get the message that if you can't fix it; you've got to stand it."

"Brokeback Mountain has had little effect on my writing life, but is the source of constant irritation in my private life."

That's funny that people are trying to rewrite the ending.

Deal with it folks. Not every story ends happy.

Isn't she the sour grape who pitched a fit when the movie didn't win the Best Movie Oscar? All she has to do is refuse delivery of these rewrites. She had a huge success, and instead of feeling fortunate, she's carping away, most likely to get her name in print again.

Yeah, it must be annoying to have so many people enjoying your work.

I'm sure he would appreciate it. Just don't tell him what changes you would make to the sketches.

I guess she's never heard of fan fiction, huh? Geez, you'd think she would be flattered.

Well, fan fiction is one thing, but people sending you pages saying "this is how your book should have ended" is another.

I'm not too crazy about people telling me how to "improve" something I wrote.

I agree, but it really makes her look bad to criticize her fans for doing so.
