"Testing the Boundaries"-sequel to "Losing Hope"

ok.. so i decided to write a sequel to my sequel's sequel.. i think i said that right. anyway, here's a little.. tell me what u think. again, viewer discretion advised.. haha.. lol.. whatever... bleh:

The door to Kate's house opened and in walked both Kate and Jinny. It had been over a month since they both landed in the hospital and they were finally ready to leave today. Kate held the door open for Jinny and she watched as the inspector walked into the house with her duffel bag in tow. Smiling, she shut the door behind her and sighed. "It's good to be home" she said and dropped her own bag on the floor.

Jinny turned around and smiled at Kate. They had been in the same hospital room since the start of their stay and still they were speaking... it was a true miracle. "Yeah... and since this is now where I call home..." she laughed. She had been at Kate's house so much her apartment was growing cobwebs. She too dropped her bag and walked over to Kate. Throwing her arms around her she gave her a quick kiss on the lips. "Home sweet home" she said and grinned.

Kate laughed and hugged Jinny back. Finally, letting go, she picked up her bag and started to the bedroom. Turning around, she saw that Jinny was following her. Once in the bedroom she sat the bag down on the floor and collapsed onto the bed. Even though she had spent the last 5 weeks laying in a hospital bed, she was truely exhausted.

Jinny followed suit, even down to the collapsing on the bed part. They both lay there, their eyes closed. Finally, Jinny scooted over and rested her head on Kate's stomach. Neither of them said a word as they fell asleep like that, safe and secure.

***THE DIVISION-TWO DAYS LATER***
Captain Kate McCafferty and Jinny Exstead walked into the division together. Standing there were both Magda and CD, smiling. They ran over to the tow women and exchanged hugs all around.

"Glad to have you back" CD said, with a smile. She had really missed them... both of them actually. "Hey Cap, I got a new partner" she said and motioned to the dark haired man sitting at Angela's old desk."

"Oh yeah? How's it working out?" Kate asked, wondering if this was going to be another Angela or if it were going to be better.

"Fine" CD said. "In fact, it's working rather well." CD looked back over at Brian, her partner, and smiled at him, motioning for him to come over, then turned back to the captain. "But he was sick yesterday so me and Mag are on a case together" CD quickly added.

Magda nodded in agreement and then smiled again. "Gosh... it's so... great to have you back!!" she said once again and hugged them both. Pulling away, she could see them laughing. "Well, it's good to see you two doing that again."

Brian walked over to the group of women and gave a cheerful grin. "Hi" he said, and stuck out his hand for the captain to shake. "You must be Captain McCafferty" he said and her nod reaffirmed his statement. "And you..." he said, turning to Jinny, "Must be Jinny." He smiled warmly and held out his hand to shake. 'They didn't tell me she was so beautiful' he thought as her hand met his in their first official physical contact.

Jinny smiled back in greeting. It was interesting having a male inspector around again. Ever since Peter was transfered, it was like the girls club there. "Hi" she said and broke off the handshake. She looked at her desk and sighed, sitting down. "It's good to be home!" she said, grinning. She watched as Magda and Kate both rolled their eyes and she laughed.

"Well" Kate said, looking at all her inspectors. "I guess we have to get back to work now." She heard her inspectors groaned and smiled. 'Jinny's right... it is good to be back.' "And since you two.." she pointed to Jinny and Brian "don't have anything to do... follow me" she motioned for them to follow her to her office and they complied.

Brian took up end of the line... and he did it on purpose. Jinny was certainly pretty and he wouldn't mind going out for a few drinks with her... if she was single, that is. He watched her walk in front of him... watched how her body moved and studied it. He smiled to himself and laughed. 'Damn Brian, you can't get your mind of girls if you tried.'

Jinny, on the other hand, was doing the same thing... only with Kate. She smiled. They had spent five weeks couped up in the same hospital room, yet spent the last two nights 'And a day' she thought, together at home... well, Kate's house without getting on each other's nerves. She just wished she had more time OUT of the hospital instead of IN.

When Kate got to her office, she turned around and watched as both Jinny and Brian took seats in the chairs opposite her desk. Picking up some folders that she found in her "case" file she quickly leafed through them. 'Here' she thought as she found the one that was the most pending. "Attempted homicide of an edlerly couple" she said and handed the file to Jinny.

Taking the case file from Kate, Jinny looked it over. "Seems like a routine investigation" she said, turning to Brian, who just nodded. Sighing, she got up, glancing at Kate slightly and smiling. "Uh... let's go" she then said quickly, covering up. Luckily, it didn't seem that Brian had caught the small shared moment between the two women and Jinny was glad.

***JINNY'S COP CAR***
Brian watched the brunette as she drove the car. They had just come back from interviewing the couple that was almost shot as well as neighbors and friends. Jinny was a good cop... there was no doubt about that. "So..." he started, trying to seem casual and not too eager. "How about we.. you know... go out for a few drinks after work?"

Hearing those words, Jinny almost lost control of the car. Concentrating, she got back her control and glanced over at Brian. "Um.. well... you see..." she stammered. She wasn't about to tell this new inspector about her and Kate... even though both Magda and CD knew. She averted her eyes back to the road and fell silent, hoping that he wouldn't bring it up again... especially since he was cute.

"Oh, ok, I see... I'm not good enough for you" he said bluntly, not caring enough to hide his feelings. Somehow he knew this girl was picky. 'Well, why wouldn't she be?' he reasoned... 'She's good looking.' He stared out the car window expressionless. He had just made a fool out of himself... he knew it.

Jinny felt her stomach twist. She didn't want this guy to think he was a loser... but there was no way she was going to tell him about her... current relationship. Deciding simplicity and vagueness best, she simply said "No, I'm seeing someone." She glanced back over at Brian and saw him relax somewhat, so she let herself relax. 'Good, now that this is over with...' she thought, but was interupted by Brian.

"Who?" he asked simply. Brian knew that it was intrusive, but he really wanted to know... so that he knew what kind of guy Jinny Exstead went for. Waiting, he saw her tense up.

"Umm.." she said and glanced down quickly. Her hands tightened on the steering wheel and she looked nervous. "Well..." she started again, but knew she couldn't come up with a lie, so she sighed, not saying anything.

"That's what I thought" he said and smirked a little. "You're not seeing anyone, are you?" He saw her relax again and he laughed out loud. "Alright.. seriously... what's wrong with me?"

Jinny smiled. 'Thank God' she thought. She was coming up to a red light, so she slowed down then came to a stop. Turning to face the man in the passenger seat, she answered him. "Nothing. Seriously... nothing." She watched his response and it was a good one. "But... I'm not sure about drinks..." she said and saw that Brian still didn't lose his smile. 'How am I gonna get out of this?' she was thinking, then a thought occured to her 'Hey, it's not like a date or anything... and I'll tell Kate... and she'll understand.' Smiling once again, Jinny gave in. "Ok... a drink... we can go out for a drink." The light turned green and Jinny saw it out of the corner of her eye and pressed the gas peddle.

***THE DIVISION LOCKER ROOM-NEAR QUITTING TIME***
Jinny looked in her locker as she heard footsteps coming towards her. Shutting it, she turned and saw Kate and smiled. "Hey" she said and walked closer towards the division captain. Smiling, she put her arms around her and brought her slowly into a kiss. Finally, breaking it off, she just smiled at her. "I've got something to tell you" she said.

Kate smiled back at Jinny. "Ok, what?" she asked, keeping her arms around the inspector.

"Well..." Jinny started, and broke away from Kate. "It's Brian... today... he asked me out for a drink or two..." she watched Kate's reaction, which one could say wasn't exactly thrilled. "And I told him no... and he just.. well... he got all weird.. and... and I told him that I was seeing someone" she paused and looked up. "But I didn't tell him.. but then he asked what was wrong with him.. and... well, I'm going out for drinks with him in about..." she looks at her watch "15 minutes."

Kate just looked at Jinny. She was going out for drinks with Brian? She didn't understand. Shaking her head she blinked, trying to make it not seem real, but it didn't work. "Jinny... why..." she started, but Jinny cut her off.

"Well, you see, I figured that if I went out for drinks with him this once then he would stop asking questions about me seeing anyone.. and I could definitely let him down easy after we had drinks, and..." she said quickly, hoping Kate would understand. She got the reaction she was looking for as a smile met her eyes.

***ANCHORSIDE-LATER***
Jinny squirmed in her seat. Her and Brian had been out now for over two hours and something was making her uncomfortable. It wasn't him... no, it's definitely wasn't him. 'It's me' she thought, but quickly pushed that out of her mind. It returned a few minutes later with even more intensity. 'You're falling for him, Jinny' she thought, but instead stood up, rejecting any feelings and thinking only of the fact that Kate was probably wondering where she was. "I should probably go" she said to Brian who was also standing up.

"Good idea" he said and placed money down on the check. "I'll walk you home" he said and smiled at her. The evening had turned out to be better than he had imagined, and he was really falling for this girl... he was falling for Jinny. Grabbing her elbow, he lead her out of the doors.

"Umm.. no, that's ok... I can walk home by myself." She disengaged their arms and made herself stand about 2 feet from him. "Thank you... for the drinks and everything" she said and slowly started to back away, heading towards Kate's house, leaving Brian behind to watch after her.

***KATE'S HOUSE***
Kate sat at her kitchen table looking over some paperwork that she had taken home. She didn't even realize what time it was until she heard the door opening. She glanced at her watch and was shocked to see how late it was.

Jinny walked into the kitchen and saw Kate sitting there and she smiled. Walking over to her, she gave her a hug and kissed her on top of the head. "Hey you" she said and grabbed a chair to sit next to her. "Is this what you've been doing all night?" she asked, surveying the papers that were laying around the table.

"Yes" Kate answered simply. "And I assume you had fun... I mean... you spent over two hours there." Kate watched as Jinny's face faltered a bit, then regained it's former appearance. "So..."

Jinny panicked. She didn't want to let on about what she had felt tonight... she didn't need to... she had Kate. 'And that's all I need' she thought. Suddenly she felt Kate's arms around her and she froze, not realizing it or meaning to, and tears came into her eyes.

Kate leaned back and looked at Jinny. When she saw the tears she knew there had to be something wrong. "Jinny?" she asked as she looked into the inspector's eyes. She could tell Jinny wanted to tell her something, but she didn't know what.

Sighing, Jinny gave up... she had to tell Kate... she would understand. "Well, Brian.. you know, he's sweet.. he's cute... he's..." she trailed off, taking a breathe "he's... well, I think I'm starting to like him..." she looked into Kate's eyes and saw the hurt there and immediately wanted to take it back. "But I don't care... because I have you..."

Kate couldn't believe what she was hearing. Was Jinny actually telling her about liking someone else? That's when Kate came to the hardest decision in her life. She wasn't going to get hurt first and worst... not anymore. "Get out" she stated flatly, tears coming to her eyes.
