So, it was 30 years ago today, September 14, that "Mork and what's her name" premiered on Planet Earth. Thirty years ago yesterday, people were asking, "Robin who?" Thirty years ago today, they knew.
Does the show still hold up? Do people like it? It certainly doesn't seem as popular these days as it was when it skyrocketed to the top of the ratings in a nanosecond back in the day. But that's not necessarily an indicator. There's some pretty BAD shows that are incredibly popular. And a show that inspired a pair of Nikes can't be all bad. For me it was always the connection between the title characters. That came through even when the scripts weren't the greatest. The affection and interplay seemed genuine. Scripts come and go but characters you want to hang with are what make a show. And I could always hang with M & M. There was that elusive chemistry thing (and no, I'm not talking about the stuff Robin W. used to deal with instant success). Of course, Robin Williams went on to have one of the biggest career afterlifes a TV star could expect. Considered by many to be the top comedian in the world, he had an incredible movie career (curiously, many of his biggest successes were dramas), numerous Oscar nominations and a win for "Good Will Hunting". Pam Dawber did alright, too (if marrying Mark Harmon is your cup of tea). Meanwhile, the big picture seems to have passed M & M by. I remember a few years back when Robin received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Golden Globes. I thought it would have been perfect if Pam Dawber had presented it to him. But, NO, they went with a "big star" (I don't even remember who). I still await their reunion in a movie or something. Meanwhile, happy anniversary to the true believers. |
