FORGET the whole "hockey-mom/ lipstick" fiasco, the first impression millions of viewers had of vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin was that she looks a lot like former "Saturday Night Live" star Tina Fey.

But Fey, who left "SNL" two years ago, has not yet agreed to play the Alaskan governor on the sketch comedy's season opener tomorrow, and "SNL" boss Lorne Michaels refuses to even hint if she will.

"You're absolutely right, you did not hear an answer," Michaels said yesterday in response to a reporter's question about Fey returning to the show for just one night to play Palin.

"There are discussions," he says. "They're ongoing."

Fey is the star, writer and executive producer (along with Michaels) of "30 Rock" - the critically acclaimed NBC comedy about the goings on behind the scenes of an "SNL"-like show - and is knee-deep in production for its fall season.

Given the nature of "SNL" and its frenetic weekly production schedule, producers have been known to make critical casting decisions at the last minute - sometimes hours before the show airs live.

A Palin sketch for Saturday night - when Olympic champ Michael Phelps hosts - has already been written and was rehearsed Wednesday with cast member Casey Wilson playing the part of Palin. But that sketch is already in danger of getting scrapped following Palin's first national sitdown interview with Charlie Gibson, parts of which first aired last night on "Nightline."

"We realized that with the Charlie Gibson interview things would change," Michaels says. "I think the way the world works now for us is if you're not doing exactly what just happened, or what everyone is thinking and talking about, then it's not going to work.

"So it's a sort of shifting target, as it were," he says.

In other "SNL" news, Michaels says he is hoping to lure Maya Rudolph back to the show to play Michelle Obama, and will add two new cast members this year, "on a rolling basis," to replace Amy Pohler, who is leaving later this season.

I can definitely see that - the two women do have an uncanny resemblance to each other.
