That is terrible news, Monika. I am very sorry. Last year my high school was closed down for something like two day because a student brought a gun to school. Also, a year ago, a teacher at my junior high (he wasn't there while I was) was charged with abusing students. I'm not sure what became of that. Whether he was found guilty or not.

Sad

Yes, it hits very close to home. My supervisor's daughter is a student there and was in the hall when she heard the shots. My boss took an hour off to pick her up and take her home. It's still jammed with police cars, fire trucks, and the SWAT team. Thank God no one was hurt and they took action quickly. It also helps that the WPD is right in front of the school!!

I remember in February of 1997 someone set off a cherry bomb in one of the restrooms and we students were cleared out of the building. We didn't even know what had happened - they wouldn't even let us go back for our coats!! That was scary enough - I can't even imagine what these kids and the staff are going through right now.

WOW! When I was a freshman in high school (which was around 1993 ) there was a shooting the last day of school about 5 min after class was let out. It took place in the hallways. Very scary. No one was hurt luckly. They caught the guy about a month later hiding out in Mexico.

That's horrible. My school was shut down for two days last spring because of threats written on bathroom walls in a few different buildings about a potential shooting.

Oh No

That's just awful, Monika. I'm just glad that there were no injuries. It seems these workplace and school shooting are becoming commonplace.

That must suck fo reveryone involved. There was a potential shoot-out at my old h.s last year. SOme student wrote a bunch of quotes on lockers and all the teachers gathered in the library thinking the worst everything was fine even though there were threats about some student killing all the senoirs at 100 days to graduation.

Sounds similar to what happened at my HS. When I was a junior in HS (this was the 2001-02 school year and this incident occurred in the spring of 2002), there were rumors of a school shooting threat that was going to occur on April 19, 2002 (just before the 3 year anniversary of the Columbine shootings). My school went into lockdown that day and no such thing happened. Although they took the threat so seriously, they allowed students to stay home from school that day if they truly were concerned about such a thing happening.

I went to school on 4/19/02 -- I HAD to, I had no choice because I had used up all of my absences going on a school trip to Washington DC for Close Up not even a week prior -- and nothing happened.

Just seeing the video of police tape and SWAT teams at my old high school turned my stomach. I still go there to vote - and I wonder how much of this will have an impact on security come Election Day.

I remember when some man opened fire at Wickliffe Junior High school back in 1994.

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio -- An armed student at Willoughby South High School was taken into police custody Tuesday morning after firing two shots, Fox 8 News reports.

A press conference was held Tuesday at 3 p.m. providing details about the incident. MyFOXCleveland.com streamed the press conference live (Click here to watch the press conference in its entirety).

A spokesperson for the Willoughby Police Department says that, fortunately, there were no injuries.

Along with the gun, police officers recovered ammo and a duffel bag from the 15-year-old boy.

After the shot was fired, the school went on lockdown and began the process of evacuating the building. Once the suspect was arrested, school officials started to dismiss all of the students.

John Calhoun has a student at the school and tells Fox 8 what went through his mind when he found out about the incident.

"The initial contact was it was just somebody with a gun and then when shots were fired, that's when I really freaked out and I was running red lights and breaking a lot of laws to get here in time," says Calhoun. (Click here for more reactions from parents and students).

School will be in session Wednesday, with extra security on the premises and counseling available for students.

The 15-year-old is being held at the Willoughby city jail and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Stay with Fox 8 News and myFOXCleveland.com for updates on this story as they become available.

I remember that day so well. That was in late October/early November of 1994, if I'm not mistaken. I'd just started my freshman year of high school. That was so sad.

Jeez, it's stuff like this that makes me appreciate the fact that I was homeschooled for my high school years a lot more now.
