Default Did Anyone Else Not Like Blanche and Rose?

I don't know if anyone agrees with me but I found Blanche and Rose annoying. I didn't really find them funny at all.

I would rather just see Sophia and Dorothy banter back and forth by themselves.

I find Rose and Sophia the funniest, alone and when they were both together (I Said Quiet! and Sophia's Answering Service) LOL!!!

I loved all of the characters equally and couldn't imagine the show being as internationally loved and successful as it was without the wonderful talents of all four amazingly talented actresses!

I love Rose!! Maybe it's because I love Betty White and find her a very funny person in all the roles she plays.

I love Blanche! My favorite character is Sophia, and Blanche/Dorothy are my 2nd favorites (I go back and forth on which I like better). Rose is funny and Betty White did a great job making that character what it became. All four of the characters were important to the show, and without one of them, it wasn't the same. Just look at the Golden Palace. Good show, but not near as funny as GG.

That's the main reason I love the Rose character. Betty White is a true comedic genius and she made the character funny. If it stayed what was originally intended, with Rue playing Rose & Betty playing Blanche, it wouldn't have worked, IMO. Both made their characters work so well.

I think that some very interesting points have been raised in the past couple of hours! In the first place, I had no idea that it was originally planned for Rue to play Rose and for Betty to play Blanch. Was this reality ever documented anywhere? Also, the second to last poster mentioned the failure of "The Golden Palace". I for one am a very firm beleiver in the notion that this was a very forced and artificial show from the get go! There are two episodes that really stick out in my mind as being very far removed from the reality of the cheesecake eating old ladies that we know and love. The first was the one about Roland being offended by the presence of a Confederate Flag at a convention of some Southern organization. The second is the one in which there was an untold story about Blanch having an older brother who was mentally ********. Wow!

The thing about how Rue and Betty switched has been mentioned in a bunch of interviews. I know it's in both their Lifetime Intimate Portraits. And I think they talked about it in the reunion show, too. Basically, since Rue's character on Maude was similar to Rose, and Betty's character on Mary Tyler Moore was a lot like Blanche, that was originally how they were going to be cast. But I think they both felt more comfortable playing the opposite role, and so the producers ended up switching them.

Hope that helps!
