"Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog
would go in." -- Mark Twain In 1990, Bill Irwin and his German Shepherd Orient began a hike of 2,144 miles, from one end of the Appalachian Trail to the other. Eight months later they completed their little journey. Bill Irwin is blind. Chips, a German Shepherd/Collie mix, was the first dog to be sent overseas in World War II and is the only animal in the history of the U.S. Military to win a Purple Heart, the Silver Star and a Distinguished Service Medal. Bobbie, a Collie, was lost in 1923 by her owners while on vacation in Wolcott, Indiana. Some six months and 2,000 miles later, she found her way back home to Silverton, Oregon. An Australian cattle dog named Bluey lived longer than any other known dog, making it all the way to the ripe old age 29 years and five months old. In 1983, Percy, a Chihuahua was struck by a car, presumed dead and buried in a grave in Barnsley, England. Hours later, Percy's pal, Mich, a Jack Russell Terrier, dug up Percy's grave, and it was discovered that Percy was still alive. The popular 1970s group Three Dog Night took its name from a term originating with Australian aborigines. During cold winter nights, nomadic people Down Under would sleep with their dogs in caves, thus an exceptionally cold evening might be a "three-dog night." "You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us." -- Robert Louis Stevenson [Source: I'll Be Doggone: Fun Facts About Man's Best Friend, by Terry, Don, and Ken Beck (2005)] |

Those are such cool facts! I have always wondered how Three Dog Night got their name! Interesting that it's an Australian term! Thanks for finding those!
