Default Bitter Band Breakups

Does anybody know of famous rock bands or musical groups that broke up badly? Whether it was drugs, jealousy, etc...

The Bee Gees broke up temporarily in 1969/1970.

Journey had a bad falling out with Steve Perry.

The Temptations fired David Ruffin, and Eddie Kendricks also left under unhappy circumstances.

Van Halen and its two most successful lead singers, David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, parted ways on bad terms. DLR is of course touring with Van Halen once again.

Van Halen broke up with David Lee Roth in 1985. Van Halen broke up with Sammy Hagar in 1996. Van Halen broke up again with David Lee Roth in 1996. Van Halen broke up with Gary Cherone in 2000. Van Halen again broke up with Sammy Hagar in 2004. What many of you may not know, is that in 2001 I was the lead singer of Van Halen but they broke up with me.

Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left Aerosmith in 1979 and didn't rejoin until 1985.

I'm sure we're probably not going to see Axl Rose and the original Guns And Roses lineup doing a group hug anytime soon.

I don't think so, either.

Peter Cetera and Chicago had a very bitter split, and even after all these years I don't think it ever healed. Peter Cetera even refused to be part of the VH1 Behind the Music special about Chicago.

I don't think that's ever going to happen.

There is still a lot of bad blood between Peter and his ex-bandmates. I think that the others in the band were really jealous that between 1976 and 1984 that the record company (first Columbia and later Warner Bros) picked all Cetera sung songs to be the singles. He also started as a minor songwriter in the band, but went on to be the main songwriter by the mid-1980's. I've also read that Peter wanted some time off from touring during the summer of 1985 to be with his wife when she has their baby and basically the other members of the band said that if he didn't tour he was out. It was their mistake because the band never recovered from his departure.

Florence Ballard was kicked out of the Supremes in 1967 due to excessive drinking and weight gain. The main story is that she was jealous of all the attention Berry Gordy and the rest of Motown was giving to Diana Ross - she was resentful. Flo spent the next decade in and out of court (she and Motown were counter-suing each other), and on welfare at one point. Sadly, in 1976, just as things began to look brighter, she died of cardiac arrest at the age of 32.

The Go-Go's had a bad breakup, didn't they? I know they recently got back together but Belinda Carlisle obviously wanted to do her own thing for a while there.

You're right, I'd forgotten about them.
