Which phase of "Roseanne" did you like best? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Don't get me wrong, I love seasons 1 through 8! Especially seasons 2-6. But the funny thing about Roseanne is that it was hardly the same show for more than a few seasons -- the feel and emphasis changed dramatically every few seasons or so. These phases are clearly marked not only by the differences I see between them, but also by the introductions used for the show during each phase.

What do you all think? Which is the best phase?

Phase 1 "Paying the bills": Seasons 1 & 2
Focused on the jobs and work Dan and Roseanne had, accompanied by the struggle to also raise young children simultaneously. A more family-friendly "Roseanne" was seen in seasons 1 & 2. Did you like this phase best?

Phase 2 "Playing cards": Seasons 3 & 4
Continued to focus on the jobs and work Dan and Roseanne had, but incorporated more social issues such as birth control etc. More and more plots started to revolve around the children, who were becoming young adults. This phase had an emphasis on the children growing up. Did you like this phase best?

Phase 3 "Eating pizza": Season 5
Focused on Roseanne getting her own business and less on her crappy jobs. More serious issues were brought to light, such as spouse abuse etc. In this phase you saw a more serious "Roseanne", but not an overly sarcastic Roseanne Conner. This phase tended to focus evenly on all three main aspects of the show: children, work and social issues. Did you like this even balance?

Phase 4 "Eating chinese food": Seasons 6 & 7
A more sarcastic Roseanne was in this phase, with an emphasis on the adults and their relationships (Jackie/Fred took up a large part, as did Roseanne and Jackie's relationship with Bev, their mother) and focused on the many, many serious issues of our time. Did you like the guts "Roseanne" had during this phase best (lesbian kiss, marijuana etc.)?

Phase 5 "Morphing": Seasons 8 & 9
More fantasy and unrealistic storylines started, even during season 8. Although season 9 was the most "out there"...it all started during season 8 -- look to when Roseanne and Jackie broke into another diner! Did you like this phase best, which had an emphasis on the wacky-side?

PS: Mind you, all seasons incorporated all of these traits to some degree or another. But each phase for the most part had a clear emphasis, in my opinion, on one of these traits. You don't have to agree with my assessment, but I'm sure you can still figure out which phase you like best!

My opinion: I like phase 2 (seasons 3 and 4) the best. Why? Because I prefer Roseanne to NOT be so sarcastic and I liked the emphsis on ALL the children growing up (I didn't like it as much before their teen years or when they were grown adults). It also brought up serious-enough issues, without becoming overly serious.

What do you think!?

I have alway's preferred the earlier season's, so I went for Phase 1, phase 3 a close second.

I never was a big fan of Roseanne, but I'd have to go with the middle years.

I would vote....but I can´t....since I would vote phase 1 and 2....I love both of em the most....but I also love the other ones....I love how she broke barriers and went into territories no other sitcom ever went to....Roseanne is the best Sitcom ever

I liked seasons 1&2 the best. Rosanne was her at her funniest and most sarcastic then IMO.

Phase 2 I guess my favorite... Season 4 is my favorite, but 5 and 6 I like just as much, so thats a hard choice...

I had to go with Phase 2. Even though Phase 1 was fantasic as well as Phase 3. Such an amazing show. It was great watching the complete series recently released by Mill Creek. It makes me appreciate this show so much more. An underrated show.
