Sad Portland Trail Blazer's Kevin Duckworth Dies at 44

Link

Kevin Duckworth, a two-time NBA All-Star who spent the majority of his 12 NBA seasons as the Portland Trail Blazers' center, has died. He was 44.

Duckworth died Monday in Kernville, Ore., near the coastal town of Lincoln City. His death was confirmed by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. Duckworth was in town as part of a Trail Blazers group hosting a free kids basketball clinic, Fox 12 reported on its Web site.

The cause of his death was not released Tuesday morning.

The 7-foot Duckworth started at center when the Trail Blazers won Western Conference titles in 1990 and '92. He played in the NBA All-Star Game in 1989 and '91.

TrueHoop's Henry Abbott will always remember Kevin Duckworth for his starring role in the most exciting basketball game Abbott has seen in person. Blog

He spent 1986-93 with Portland and also played for Washington, Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Duckworth's last season in the league, 1996-97, was spent with the Clippers. He played his college basketball at Eastern Illinois. A second-round draft pick of the San Antonio Spurs in 1986, Duckworth was named the NBA's Most Improved Player in his second year in the league.

Sad news to hear. Those were some great Trail Blazers teams in the early '90s.

I heard this at work yesterday and I am real sadden. I was a Trailblazer fan back in the day and Duck was a decent center. He wasn't great, but he was able to give you two quick points in the paint. He career never was the same after he left the Trailblazers but Duck is huge in Portland and he get mad props from me. RIP big Duck!

Oh that's awful! I am not a basketball fan, but I guess I will eventually become a Blazers fan since the Sonics are gone. Sad to hear that this former player has died. And so young! Anyone know how this happened?

Officials: Kevin Duckworth died of heart disease

By Brian Hamilton | Chicago Tribune staff reporter
August 28, 2008
Former Thornridge and Eastern Illinois star Kevin Duckworth died of congestive heart failure Monday, according to the Oregon state medical examiner's office.

Duckworth, 44, passed away while on a trip to the Oregon coast to be host for a free basketball clinic. The medical examiner's report said the cause of death "was attributed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure."

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle. The medical examiner's office concluded that it, along with the NBA veteran's hypertension, resulted in an enlarged heart that had been "failing for some time."

Although talented, the 7-footer's weight issues date to his days at Thornridge, and Eastern Illinois had him work with a nutritionist in his four years there. According to Francine Duckworth, Kevin's younger sister, both his brothers and his father also died of congestive heart failure.
