So - a thread about mediums. What are people's thoughts?

I'll start by saying that I believe in the afterlife and I believe that, with enough training, anyone can communicate with spirits. I believe it's an ability that we all have. I attend the Spiritualist Church in my hometown where they have a medium every week. It's there that I met one of my closest friends, Kris, who is also a medium.

I'm not disputing for a second that there aren't many false mediums though. This is what makes it difficult for genuine mediums to be taken seriously; there are many people who are simply pretending in order to cheat people. It's outrageous that they take advantage of people in this way. However, I do believe that there are many genuine mediums in the world and I have personally seen some that I am convinced have been genuine as they've known things that they couldn't have known unless they were receiving infomation from Spirit.

As I said, my friend Kris is a medium and he speaks to his spirit guide quite a lot. He's also spoken to my spirit guide a few times. I would like to learn how to do this myself as I believe that people could gain a lot of help from those on the Other Side. So I'm trying to develop my abilities and trying to meditate more often.

Do you think that all mediums are lying? Or that what they see/hear is just in their imagination or something?

Kris wouldn't lie about something like that, he dislikes liars. For me, that leaves only the possiblities that he's imagining everything or that he's telling the truth. Because of my beliefs and the fact that I've see mediums who have been very accurate, I believe that Kris can communicate with spirits.

I do believe that some people possess the gift of being a medium. Certainly there are a lot of phonies out there, but there are a few good ones.

My Mom went to a really good medium a few years ago; he's so good that he has about a 6 month to a year waiting list. She went in and he told her LOADS of stuff about my family (stuff that he would have no way of knowing), what would happen to some of us in the future (some of which has come true), and passed along messages from my Nana (my Mom's mother, who passed away in 1999). It was a very healing experience for my Mom because she really needed that closure. It was also very eerie to have him give such detailed descriptions of our family.

Anyway, like I said, there are definitely fakes out there (probably more scammers than real mediums), but there are definitely people out there who have some paranormal ability to connect with the dead and such. I'm a big believer in the paranormal.

The first time he was talking to both his guide and my guide while I was in the room with him. He'll do that sometimes - talk to his guide or another spirit while there are other people around, so people who don't know he's a medium probably think he's talking to himself. I had several things I wanted to ask both guides and he told me what both were saying.

It was also my guide and Kris's own personal spirit guide who got him to leave his mediumship circle early to come over and do a protection spell on me (this was very shortly after we'd met.) Before Kris became a Spiritualist he used to be a Wiccan and still wears a pentagram for protection and still owns his wand and spellbooks although he doesn't use them any more except for healing. Anyway I wanted to see if I could meet any of my own guides so the evening before we'd done a meditation exercise from one of his Wiccan books. Apparently with a lot of Wiccan exercises you're supposed to do a protection spell beforehand to protect yourself from any negative energies but he forgot to do this. The next evening, he came over to my house in a panic and told me that his guides had told him that he needed to come over and perform the protection spell on me. He'd brought the stuff he needed, his wand, a candle and some incense, etc and so he did it there and then in my living room.

Shortly before my holiday (I'm on a vacation at the moment) Kris and I went to the witches' shop in town, which is owned by a couple of Wiccans. It's an interesting place, I've been there a few times myself to ask advice of the people there. Even though I'm not a Wiccan, I'm a New Ager and some of the things I believe in relate to some of the Wiccan beliefs.

Like Kristel I am a stong believer in the paranormal. We know so little about the human brain and have access to only a small percentage of our own brains, that I think it would be ignorant to think that such mental abilities like ESP are just science fiction. Just imagine what a person with access to areas of their mind that most of don't could do? I also believe in mediums to a degree. I think it is an ability that some people can possess, but I don't believe that it is a gift that we all have.

I do think that all people have the ability to communicate with spirit but that it comes more naturally to some and others may have to work hard at it. I'd like to become a medium so I need to work on developing the skills I need to do this. I need to practice meditation more regularly as it's easier for spirits to communicate if you're in a meditative state. It's a two-way thing. When a medium communicates with a spirit, the medium is raising their vibrations and the spirit is lowering their vibrations, so they kind of meet half-way.
