Recovery

One and A Half years after “A Tragic Time”.


Part One

“Mom!” Ben called out when he heard the door open and he ran into the living room, “Guess what we did in school today!”
“What did you do today?”
“We played a game of kick ball and our team won!” Ben was very excited.
CD was there; she had driven Magda to and from work today. Ever since she lost function in her Angela and CD had taken turns driving Magda. Well mainly CD for a while now, Angela had a seven month old daughter named Annie. She had just gotten back to work since she needed to stay home for a while.
“That’s really neat Ben!” Magda said. “CD thanks for the ride.”
“Hey no problem Mag, anytime.” CD told her, “See you tomorrow.”
“Mom can CD stay for dinner?”
“I don’t see why not. CD you want to stay for dinner?”
“I need to get home, Paul was supposed to get home early today.”
“All right. See you tomorrow CD.”

When CD left Magda’s mom came in the room.
“Hi Magda. How was your day?” She asked her
“Uh okay. Paper work isn’t all that great mom.”
“Oh, I have a pizza in the oven. Is that okay?”
“Sure.” Magda said, “So what else did you do today Ben?”
“I got my report card.” He said, not very enthused.
“Okay, bring it out here and let me see what your grades are like this time.”
Ben sighed as he ran to his room to get his report card. Magda figured Ben wasn’t to excited about showing his mom this.
“Here you go.” Ben said as he handed Magda the report card.
Magda looked over the report card and noticed that Ben’s teacher had left a comment on the report card, ‘Ben has a hard time concentrating in class and his grades have been dropping. I am worried that there is something bothering him at home. I think we should set up a parent teacher conference to discuss this.’ Magda read to herself.
“Ben, is something bothering you? Because on your report card your teacher says that you aren’t concentrating very well in class and your grades are dropping. Oh and don’t think I wouldn’t have noticed that if she didn’t put that there. Because I did.”
“No mom. Nothing is bothering me.” Ben said as he looked at her.
Now Ben usually got good grades and he always had paid attention in class. But ever since Jinny died and Magda was in a wheelchair Ben hadn’t been doing as good in school.
“Pizza’s ready.” Magda’s mom called from the kitchen.

Back at Angela’s place she was feeding Annie. Annie was born prematurely and was 4 lbs 6 oz when she was born. Now Annie was 10 lbs. 8 oz. Angela was so happy to have a child. Unfortunately it made working so much harder. She had a sitter for Annie, but the nights Daniel had to work late, and she had to stay after a little while was just so stressful for her.

When CD got home Paul was there. He had ordered Italian food and had the table set up for a nice candle light dinner.
“Hey Paul, what’s the occasion?”
“There isn’t one. I just felt like having a nice dinner at home to night.” He smiled as he looked at CD.
“What’s up Paul?”
“Nothing Candy, nothing. You just seem a little bit stressed lately and I just wanted to make things a little bit easier on you. A nice dinner, maybe a movie or something.”

Part Two

When Kate got home she sat on the couch and turned on the TV.
“What an incredibly long day.” She said to herself, “I guess I better get some dinner.”
Kate ate dinner and went to bed. She had nothing better to do.

At Angela’s house she was just ready to give Annie a bath. Right as she was picking her up Daniel walked in the door.
“Hi Ange.”
“Hey Daniel.”
“And how’s my angel? Huh how’s Annie?” Annie got a big smile across her face.
“You want to give her a bath while I get dinner ready?” Angela asked her, hoping he’d give her the bath.
“Sure. How was your day?”
”Long! We have a rape case right now and it’s taking forever to solve.”
“Oh I’m sorry.”

After Magda, Ben, and her mom finish eating Magda calls Ben’s teacher to try and set up a parent teacher conference.
“Hello, Ms. Beest. Yes this is Magda Ramirez, Ben’s mom. Yes on his report card you said he was having problems concentrating and his grades were dropping. I am calling to set up a conference. Yes I know you know that. That would work fine. Sure tomorrow at 7:00. See you then. Bye.”
“So what did she say?” Ben asked his mother.
“Well she’s coming here tomorrow at 7:00 pm. I’ll be home by then and you’re going to sit there with us so we can discuss this.”
“Okay.” Ben frowned. He hated parent teacher conferences.
“Now, do you have any homework?”
“Math.”
“Get it out Ben.”
“Okay.”
Magda went into her room. She knew pretty much why Ben wasn’t concentrating, first off his mom is in a wheelchair…that’s going to make him concentrate, and Ben probably missed Jinny. Magda couldn’t be sure though. She missed Jin and that’s why she wasn’t concentrating at work. Ben came in his mom’s room and sat down next to her bed.
“Mom, I need help with this multiplication problem.”
“Okay, let me see it.” Magda said as Ben was handing her the worksheet.
“7 times 8, okay Ben…do you know what 6 times 8 is?”
“No.”
“5 times 8?”
“Forty.”
“Okay so add sixteen on to forty.”
“56!”
“Yeah Ben.”
As Magda was handing the paper back to him she had another seizer. Ben ran and got his grandma and she called 911. When the paramedics got there the rushed Mag to the hospital, right behind them were Ben and his Grandma.
“Grandma, shouldn’t we call the people mom works with?”
“Yeah, when we get there, Ben.”
When they got there they had to wait in the ER waiting room. Magda’s mom got up to call everyone, just in case this happened Magda had given her mom a list of numbers to call. The first was CD’s cell.

CD answered it, “DeLorenzo, what happened? Okay, I’ll be right there. Thanks for calling. Bye.”
“CD who was that?” Paul asked her.
“Mag’s mom, she’s having another seizer.”
“Is she okay?” Paul asked her.
“I don’t know. But I have to go.”
“Alright.”
CD ran out the door to the car. She then drove off to the hospital.

Next was Angela’s cell she answered it, “Reide, is she okay? Okay I’ll be right there.” She hang up the phone, “Daniel, I need to go, Mag is having a seizer.”
“Okay, I’ll watch Annie.”
“Oh she’s been fed.”
Angela left to get in the car and drive off to the hospital.

Last but not least was the wonderful captain! When her cell rang she answered it, “McCafferty, yes I’ll be right in. Thank you. Bye.”
She left and went strait to the hospital.

Part Three

When everyone got to the hospital they all waited impatiently for the news. A doctor came out of the ER.
“Ramirez.” Everyone stood up when he called Magda’s name.
“Well she had a very bad seizer, and we don’t know if she’s going to make it. She’s had so many and this is the worse one yet. She may not make it this time. I’m very sorry to tell you this. She can have visitors, only one at a time.”
“Thank you doctor.” Kate told him. “You want to go Ms. Ramirez.”
“Yes thank you.” She answered her.
When she came out of Mag’s room CD was chosen to go in next. When she got in she saw Magda lying there, she didn’t know what to think.
“Magda,”
“Hey CD.”
“How ya doing?”
“Been better.”
“Well at least you’re still alive.”
“Yeah. I may not make it though.” All of a sudden the heart monitor Mag was hooked up to went flat. CD freaked. Doctors and nurses came running in, they told CD to wait outside, she was scared, she didn’t want to lose Mag, not after she lost Jinny. When everyone saw CD they could tell something was wrong.
“CD what is it?” Angela asked her. CD didn’t respond; she just sat down. At that point they all knew something was wrong. Magda probably wouldn’t make it.
“CD, you okay?” Kate tried to get her attention; she just sat there though. Totally unresponsive, she didn’t know what to do or tell them.
Kate stood up and went to sit by CD, she couldn’t get her to talk, “CD are you okay? CD???” She just sat there, she didn’t know what to do.

A doctor walked out, he looked very upset. “I don’t want to be the one to have to tell you this, but Ms. Ramirez didn’t make it. We did all we could to save her, but she didn’t make it.”
Kate gulped, “Thank you doctor.” She told him.

Everyone left and went there separate ways then.

That night on the news there was a story about Magda.
“An Inspector for the SFPD died today, a year and a half ago Magda Ramirez was shot by a young girl named Dehnia Herrick. She lost all function of her legs after that. Inspector Ramirez suffered a seizer today and she had so many she just lost her life. Some of her co-workers came out and talked about this Inspector, ‘She was a great friend and inspector, although she was on desk duty because she couldn’t walk she still got the work done.’ Her captain, Kate McCafferty told the press today. Inspector Reide also talked to the press, ‘She was a great person with a wonderful personality. She will be missed by many people.’ Magda Ramirez had one son, Ben, who she took care of being an only mother. This inspector will be missed by the SFPD.”

Ben went back to his grandma’s house. He lived with her from then on. He was never his cheerful self again and his grades continued to decrease.

CD went home and sat there for about three days. She cried from time to time.

Angela went home to tell Daniel, she went and cried while he hugged her. She felt comfort in his arms. Then she saw Annie, she went to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

Kate went to her house and thought about Magda, she knew she’d miss her forever.

Magda will always be remembered as the funny, young, wonderful friend and mother to a wonderful young boy. She will be missed and life will never be the same again. She won’t be forgotten by anyone ever. She was there for everyone to lean on no matter how busy she was. She took time for her friends and family and always showed how much she cared. Everyone will cherish his or her time with Magda and Jinny. These two girls who always cared; who were there for everyone were now gone. Though they both had problems they were there. They were friends.

This is over but there will be another one where I left off. I didn’t know where to take this so I ended it. I hope you liked this.
