Many of the old ones (50's-60's)and some of the newer shows (70's-90's)too. I just don't understand it. You'd think they'd jump at the chance to sell them. There are more and more people who want the shows on DVD. For myself, there are a lot of old shows that I know I'll never see again.

Residuals is one factor--since contracts were not negotiated back then even in hopes that a series would find a life in the home market.
Music rights seems to be a big factor in why a lot of variety shows and shows that dealt with nostalgia/heavy use of songs are not being released. |

It could also explain why sales for the first few Happy Days seasons were lower than expected.

and that's also why the special "DICK VAN DYKE AND THE OTHER WOMAN" isn't on DVD. (clips from it are on youtube, though)

The 1960's Batman is being held up for a variety of reasons, not the least which is the dispute between Warner Brothers (who owns the character) and Fox (which owns the series) over residuals, music rights, ect. which is so complicated it may never get resolved.

Which is why I just transferred the 120 episodes I have on tape from 16mm film prints. The studio can sit on it until it rots for all I care. |

I used to like watching "Our House" with Wilford Brimly and Shannen Doherty. I wish that show would come out on DVD.

One of the reason I think that a lot of the great shows from the 50's and 60's have not seen the light of day on DVD is because the distributers feel they wont sell. Part of that is those shows get seldom broadcast on television anymore(thanks a lot TVLand). If they were shown then folks who saw them the first time around, and people seeing them for the first time would be interested and they would sell.
Also I would so love to see Shindig come on DVD but since that was a live music show, there are probably loads of copyright issues there. |
