Default Internet Radio

Does anyone really like internet radio? I even listen to local stations that I can pick up with an actual radio online when I'm on my laptop. I listen to the talk shows on VOCM every day (even though I despise country music) and some other stations and it was great when I was in the US to be able to listen to 5 different local radio stations over the internet.

It doesn't use much bandwidth either...

i listen to z100 (NYC mainstream radio station) on the internet...i like it. there's no commercials (they play fake commercials or songs instead of commercials) and most of the time it works pretty well. considering i listen to it all the time i would say yes i really i like it

I usually go to Launch or CBS Radio and find a station that plays weird "elevator music." It helps me relax at work. When I want some actual music, KROQ 2 (80's alternative) is the best.

Nothing beats Pandora though.

there are probably going to be some big changes in internet radio over the next year or so, the Copyright Royalty Board ordered per-song performance royalties to be increased from 8/100 of a cent per song per listener for online use to 19/100 of a cent per song per listener by 2010.

...and there is some sad news in there for pandora users: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...081801525.html

I like internet radio more than listening to FM radio because thankfully on my connection, most streams DO NOT HAVE HEAVY BASS which makes the music sound like crap!! (On FM radio most stations sound like crap to me (Heavy bass, etc))

There are a couple streams I dont listen to because they are processed with heavy bass.. (Digital crappy sound)

Ah, yes. Who among us doesn’t prefer the warm sounds of analog internet radio (which is definitely a real thing)?

Pumping up bass has nothing to do with digital processing. Bass and treble controls predate the digital era.

And (FM) broadcasters have been altering music for many years, mostly by compressing the dynamic range (in other words, pump up the [overall] volume.) In their defense, this is understandable--they're catering to listening in the car, where an overall louder volume is a necessity--an unaltered quiet passage would be drowned out by car noise.

The heavy bass you’re hearing on those remastered ’60s tracks is an engineering decision, not a characteristic of digital audio. Take the same master tape, have a different engineer remix it, and you get a different result. Digital is just a container — it doesn’t add or subtract bass on its own.

Yes. AI:

Brickwalling in music refers to a mastering technique that applies extreme dynamic range compression, making the audio levels peak very close to the maximum amplitude, which can lead to a loss of sound quality and listener enjoyment. This practice is often criticized for sacrificing fidelity in favor of increased loudness.
It's a widely criticized practice, and really ruins a recording.

As Dream says, remixing the recording is its own issue. It sure is a "today" thing though.
