Therapy, Confidential
Starring Debra Messing as Dr. Lorelei Greene, a highly-recommended, successful therapist who loves to help her clients with their marriage and individual problems and crises, even though she is her own best patient as her personal life leaves something to be desired and rather complex. Lorelei shares a close relationship with her slightly older brother, Brian Greene (David Schwimmer). Driven defense attorney, Brian shares his life with his new outgoing and beautiful fiancee, Whitney Archibald (Christina Applegate). Brian loves Whitney, the heiress of the Archibald candy bar fortune, but doesn't want to shut Lorelei out of his life after the wedding, due to he is the only family that Lorelei has (after their mom died of breast cancer a few years ago, and their estranged father doesn't speak with either of them). This show puts the emphasis mostly on three of Lorelei's married clients who are in need of her counseling. Lorelei's three married couple clients are the Chaisens, the Kings, and the Masseys. First of all, Richard and Roz Chaisen (Paul Reiser, Katey Sagal) are long-time patients of Dr. Greene, as they have been having marital issues for most of their marriage. Richard is a workaholic who spends long hours at his job, and in Roz's eyes, shows very little interest in his wife and family. Roz is a recovering alcoholic who began drinking during her first marriage to her abusive drunk of an ex-husband, and she blames Richard for not being there for her during her time of need when she decided to quit drinking early in their marriage. Recently, Roz has began an affair with the hunky widower, David Wilson (Blair Underwood), who lives next door to the Chaisens. Second couple is Curtis and Danielle King (Jaleel White, Tia Mowry), who are newlyweds who just celebrated their third wedding anniversary but their marriage hasn't been all ideal ever since the "honeymoon ended". Curtis feels Danielle resents "settling" for him and wishing she would have married someone else, especially after Curtis gets laid off from his job. Danielle begins to feel frustrated when Curtis's job-loss has changed Curtis into putting off her romantic advances and turning down sex, which worries Danielle. Danielle finds herself feeling guilty when she even considers thinking about the topic of leaving Curtis or eventually divorcing, and going separate ways which causes her to become upset, as while, they both end up longing for the ideal marriage that they both have dreamed of. Lastly, Ted and Beth Massey's (Mark Derwin, Kim Raver) marital issues have stemmed from their struggle to conceive a child (and stay pregnant). During their ten-year-marriage, Beth has suffered three miscarriages, Ted has had two different affairs (one with his former secretary, one with his brother's ex-wife), and when Beth finally becomes pregnant, she ends up going into labor prematurely and the baby becomes stillborn (which haunts Beth in her nightmares to this day). While dealing with her choatic personal life and counseling her patients/clients, Lorelei has accepted to become a mentor for three young aspiring psychotherapists - the quirky and "semi-weird" Chadd Hanks (B.J. Novak), the sharp-tongued, quick-witted Breanne Rodriquez (Alisa Reyes), and the smart and ambitious blonde Shelly Langman (Maggie Lawson). After agreeing to mentor Chadd, Shelly, and Breanne, Lorelei begins to doubt her skills and abilities as a therapist when she feels pulled in many directions.
