I felt for Thirston when Gilligan broke his one-of-a-kind solid gold camera!

Hey, I thought (according to "Agonized Labor") that Lovey knew absolutely nothing about sewing and here, she's making clothes????

I wonder why Lovey never owned a red dress--she sometimes does wear red.

Say, it's curious how the Professor is so male/female savvy all of a sudden with respect to the flowers, no note, etc.

Why, specifically, do you think Gilligan and Maryann are so nervous at the dinner?

How was Lovey going to use her hair dryer with no electricity?

Why is everyone scrunched together at the table for lunch when there's a whole empty side? The Skipper looks as if he's doing some serious chaperone sitting between Gilligan and Maryann!! Also, what are they eating?

When Gilligan and the Skipper are talking to the side, Ginger joins in on their conversation immediately when she arrives. How did she know what they were talking about?

The recreated restaurant sequence --especially Ginger's dance, etc. are so funny!


What on earth is the Professor whispering to Maryann and why have this in an MAG episode?

In his book, Bob Denver talks about Ginger's hula as the sexiest ever. I'm not an expert but it looks similar to the hula, in general. Isn't it supposed to be kind of a sexy dance anyway?

Someone please answer this: for those of you who watch on cable, is the final scene, with Gilligan and Maryann walking, usually omitted? It's interesting how people disagree about this episode. Some think the matchmaking worked and some think it didn't. When I was younger I thought it didn't totally and Gilligan and Maryann at the end were going back to what they usually did. That was what I thought then; I've sinced changed my mind. What do you think--did it work or not?

This episode seems out of sequence with some earlier ones in which Maryann seems very demonstrative about her feelings for Gilligan.

Part of the GI lore is that there was supposed to be a romance between Gilligan and Maryann started with this episode but the censors interfered. Does that mean they interfered after this episode--not permitting anything else but letting this one stand or that even this one is different from what it was originally meant to be? Does anyone know?

Another comment that has traveled around message boards is that Schwartz was to marry and include a child for some of the castaways in future seasons if ratings necessitated this. I do know Bob Denver mentioned Schwartz's idea for the "Next Generation" series. Is that what is meant by this? If on the original GI series in future seasons, where did you hear this--it is not in Schwartz's book.

I'm also curious how the MAP's support their point given this episode.

One more thing that puzzles me--when Ginger tips Gilligan off about not being fooled by appearances he claims, thinking Ginger is confessing her feelings for him, that he "likes" her just as much. This would have been very funny if there were a running Gilligan likes Ginger plot/not Maryann. That doesn't really seem to be the case, though. So what then is this all about, how does it fit in besides being a misunderstanding joke, it seems contradictory with the whole Gilligan/Maryann thing in this episode.

Boy, have I got too much time on my hands today or what?

This episode almost seems to be structured in two halves. Part One: get Mary Ann and Gilligan together, and then that's abandoned for Part Two: get Mr. and Mrs. Howell back together.

To respond to some of your comments, Im, you're absolutely right that Lovey has a red dress. She's wearing it when she faints in Don't Bug the Mosquitoes. I find that whenever the Howells have a fight it's because Lovey's being unreasonable, and yet it's always Thurston who ends up having to do the reconciling. Still, Lovey's insecurity does add depth to her character and certainly makes for some funny situations.

I love the Professor and the Skipper teasing the mickey out of Gilligan. What would they have said had they seen the tree-kissing scene from Goodbye Island? "Mary Ann and Gilligan, tasting the tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g!"

Gilligan imitating the Professor. Kills me every time.

Gilligan is nervous at the dinner because the Skipper and the Professor have got him thinking there might be a misunderstanding. Mary Ann is nervous because she thinks Gilligan really did give her the flowers - and doesn't she look disappointed when she finds out he didn't! Awww.

I watch the episode on DVD, so Gilligan and Mary Ann's stroll at the end of the episode is still there.

To answer the most nagging question... I think the matchmaking worked. Maybe it didn't have an immeadiate effect, but I think the idea that two of the castaways could be paired up provoked them to think of the way each of them viewed their fellow castaways a little bit differently.

It's a shame that the censors had to intervene. What I'd really like, is to read a fanfiction story that was truly GI canon. Some sort of story that would resolve how MAG and GP find romantic feelings for each other, date, get married, have kids, and live happily ever after. The only problem with all of the fanfics that I've read, and (admittedly) written, deal with a more fantastic approach to the situation, no matter what the pairing. I guess, mostly, I'd really like to hear the reasoning behind each character's romantic inclination for another castaway. Like... what exactly was Sherwood thinking when he created the characters? Did he think, 'oh, well, character A should be compatible with character B...'. And of course, the way the individual actors/actresses embodied the characters put a spin on the whole show.

I think the matchmaking worked aswell.It just too bad that the censors stopped the romance.Their reason was ridiculous just because they were unchaperonned on the deserted island...Hello?They weren't alone on the island.There were plently of people to check on those 2 lovebirds.The skipper could married them on raft like they did for the Howells.

This episode was supposed to be the start of something really special & beautiful between Mary Ann & Gilligan.Did you see Mary Ann's reaction when Ginger said Gilligan sent her the flowers,she was almost flooting in the air,she was so happy and her desespointment when she find out that it was Mrs.Howell who did.

Then Gilligan realised that the guys were not talking about Ginger but,Mary Ann...uh,oh...His face completly changed,he was so embarrassed.I think it was really cute when they were sweet talking each other.Mary Ann touched his arm,they were looking deeply in each other eyes and of course,the Howells came back as they were warming up.Way to go matchmakers!They thought were going to teach them what real happiness is...Of course,a Howell's fight is always good example right
