Ah, you're an anti-dentite!! (as Seinfeld's Kramer would say.)
Seriously, I'm sorry to hear of your phobia. I will pray for you, and please let us know how things go.

I wish I could help you out but the Dentist is never fun. It's painful, it's inconvenient, and it is kinda scary...But what I've learned is that the only way to get over that type of fear is to just DO it.
It helps if you have a good dentist, too. I wouldn't keep going back to the same one if they're a jerk, like you said. |

i'm so lucky to have such a great dentist. dr, farley has been the best, he's very skilled at what he does and i trust him immensely. i've been going to him since 3rd grade. i feel very confident with his work. i also see another dentist, dr. quatracelli for root canals only and he's the best as well. i've had 3 or 4 done by him and have never once been afraid. its like a walk in the park. the only time i was ever scared was when i had to have a tooth extracted without being put under but everything turned out alright.
my teeth also weren't the very best when i first started seeing dr. farley as there was a long gap (3 years) between visits at one point. i had a cavity in almost every tooth and although he did everything he could to save them a few needed to be pulled (luckily in back where you can't see) but after several appointments dr, farley got my teeth in order. he was very good to me, working on 2 or 3 at a time. sometimes i'd have 2 appointments in a week as he was aware my insurance was about to run out. i ran out of insurance last may and it has been a year but now that we got the loan i can afford to get benefits from my job and will be able to see him once again. |

I can relate to this thread!
I see the dentist every three months and am always nervous a few days before the appointment. Even though I haven't needed dental work in the last year 8 months or so. It does help to have my walkman radio when my teeth are being cleaned or worked on. I play tapes and that makes the appointment less boring and helps with the nerves. Sedation dentistry is availabe for those who are really nervous. |

The dentist is one dr. I don't fear.
I don't exactly like it because it grosses me out beyond belief, I hate the smell of the rubber gloves, and I choke on those damn things they put in your mouth to take x-rays, but it fairly painless. I've been lucky and have had only one cavity in my life. Getting braces was wayyyyyyyy worse that anything the dentist has ever done to me.I'd go to the dentist 100x in a row before I'd go to the GYN. That's the worst dr. on the planet! Anyway, just close your eyes and pretend you're somewhere you'd rather be. A friendly hygentist is helpful, so hopefully you can get a good one. Good luck! |

I refused to go to the dentist for years due to fear and ended up having to go due to a chipped tooth which developed into a cavity. The guy I ended up going to was surprisingly friendly and reassuring and the experience wasn't nearly as bad as I expected (nor was the pain - there was little of it). I now go regularly for the 'check-ups' and am trying to repair the damage of years past.
The sooner you go, the easier it's going to be. |

Who likes going to the dentist? That's just awful! And it's expensive too! Here in Sweden, going to the dentist is free until you're twenty years old. But that still means I've had to pay for the last four years.
But I still go, once a year. (I haven't heard from them yet this year though.) How did it go, Neonfire? |

This really isn't the place for the dental story from hell that I was going to tell, so I'll just say this. I really like my dentist, although their method of doing things is rather strange. They can't do a checkup and cleaning in one visit. It has to be separate, which of course costs more money. But still, I do like going because you can watch TV while you are there (really!). I would never watch something funny, though... can you imagine!?
