Default Morgan Freeman seriously hurt in car accident

JACKSON, Miss. - Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was injured in a car accident late Sunday night and is in a hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Stringer said Freeman, 71, is in serious condition. The hospital is about 90 miles north of the accident scene in rural Tallahatchie County in the Mississippi Delta.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams confirmed Freeman was in a wreck shortly before midnight Sunday, but said he was still gathering information and had few details Monday. Earlier reports said the actor's car left the road and flipped several times.

Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said he arrived at the accident scene on Mississippi Highway 32 soon after it happened about 4 miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife.

McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman’s car was airborne when it left the highway and landed in a ditch.

“They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle,” McFerrin said. “He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”

McFerrin said bystanders converged on the scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor.

When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, Freeman joked, “no freebies, no freebies,” McFerrin said.

Freeman won an Oscar for his role in “Million Dollar Baby.” His screen credits also include “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Driving Miss Daisy” and he currently stars in the Batman blockbuster “The Dark Knight.”

The hospital where Freeman is being treated is commonly known as The Med, and is an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis.

I love Morgan Freeman! I was just watching The Bucket List a few days ago and thinking what a wonderful actor he is. I pray that he will have a speedy recovery.

I hope he's okay. I have a bad feeling about this, and I'm not exactly sure why. He's such a great actor, and seems like a real nice man.

I've liked Morgan Freeman since I first saw him on The Electric Co. and I certainly wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Me too, and I also loved him in Shashank Redemption and Driving Miss Daisy. I am very anxious to see "The Bucket List"

Thank God he was wearing his seatbelt, or the outcome could have been tragic.

The Associated Press, quoting a statement from Freeman's publicist, Donna Lee, reported that the 71-year old actor 'has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage, but is in good spirits.'

'He is having a little bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage,' Lee's statement said adding that, 'He says he'll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery.'

I'm glad that it is sounding good for a full recovery.

Freeman 'Doing Well' After Surgery

Morgan Freeman has undergone surgery on his left arm and is expected to leave the hospital later this week, just days after he was involved in a serious car crash.

Freeman and a female passenger had to be cut free from the wreckage and airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis on Sunday night, after the actor lost control of his vehicle on the highway near his home in Charleston, Miss.

The 71-year-old suffered a broken arm and shoulder when he flipped his car over in the crash.

And Freeman's publicist Donna Lee has confirmed "The Dark Knight" star is making progress and looking forward to returning home.

In a statement released today, she says: "Morgan is doing well after his surgery last night to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand.

"The surgery last night lasted four and a half hours. He's visiting with family this morning. As of this morning he's up and walking around and looking forward to his release in a few days."

Freeman was said to be "in good spirits" on Monday when he arrived at the hospital before his surgery took place.

His passenger -- whose relationship to Freeman is unknown -- is reportedly suffering from minor injuries but is "in good condition."
