My most recent post regarding the episode "Samantha's Protest" is called "More Nail Polish". Having seen the episode several times on "You Tube" I have found something else that I never realized before. At the point in which Julie says to Katie "he was not whisteling at you, he was calling his dog" it was clear that the audience broke out into great gales of laughter. On top of this, I could also hear a bunch of hand clapping. Now I am not sure if this was a live audience of if it was just a laugh track. However, what I interpret this to mean is that the viewers were clapping at Julie's ability to smack Katie down in a situation like this. I thought that this was great! It was clear that Katie's hormones were on roller skates and her ego had run away with her. I thought that she deserved to be told how disgusting her behavior was! Needless to say that I thought it really served her right to learn that the handsome boy from the protest was taking Samantha to a movie the next day at the end!

I don't know, maybe it was taped in front of a live audience. I know on the 100th episode it was stated at the beginning that it was taped in front of a live audience and at the end of the episode, they showed the curtain call.

Given that most of my posts never get responses, I am very happy to see that this one got one is less than an hour! I think that the respondee has raised some very good points here. To start with, I remember the episode that was shown live and I remember the curtain call at the end. I believe that this episode was called "Cat Story". In any event, if my memory is correct, all of the episodes had a laugh track. Each time that something happened that was supposed to be funny, the audience would brake out into laughter. The thing that I am not sure of is whether this show was filmed in front of a studio audniece or if the laughing sound was just made by machine. Also, when something good had happened, in addition to the laughing, there was usually hand clapping to signify approval by the audience. One example of this is the pay phone scene in the first-season episode called the "Emergency". When Hazel Shermet's character was made to chase down her purse after Nell had placed it on a gurney pole, the audience clapped. After the applauce died down, Nell picked up the receiver from the ledge where the purse and been sitting and said, "Hello Mildred? Oh girls and hate your guts! Yeah and I don't ever want to talk to you again!" and then hung up. At this point, the audience started to clap again because they felt that the busybody had been brought to justice.

Because several people seem to be posting on this page and because I have gotten responses to other threads regarding the same topic that I introduced on this thread, I decided to try my hand at bringing this one to the top. I would be very interested in other peoples' ideas about what I was thinking about once upon a time!

I am 100% sure there was an audience throughout the entire series. If you watch the episode in season 5 "The Gun", Nell goes to eat her mother's meatloaf. Listen in the audience. Some guy goes "She gon' grub!"

Well, this was a good topic, and yeah, I always wondered if the show was live or not. I think all the comedy shows are taped live. TV Dramas and Soaps are closed set.

I am sure GAB was filmed live mostly because they did it live in the episode "Cat Story", and they showed the studio audience. Nell also spoke to the cameras in the 100th episode "The Elevator", but the audience was right in front of her. I think she was talking to both the studio audience who saw it live for taping and the television viewers.

Now, they could have used the set and brought it to a place where they had more room for a studio audience as was shown in "Cat Story", but in the episode "The Gun" it is 100% certain they used an audience because as soon as Mama leaves the room and leaves Nell the meatloaf, you hear a guy saying that line "She gon' grub." It sounded like a southern guy in the audience who just blurted it out. Then some light laughter came out of the audience to his response.

Look at The Cosby Show...during Cliff and Claire's dance in the final episode, they danced off to the audience, where it was filmed in front of them.


I think most of the comedy shows or all of them have audiences there to watch the filming. Dramas and Soaps are definitely closed. Mostly the laugh track Comedy shows I bet allow studio audience.

Once again, I am very happy to have generated a response! I find all of the last poster's ideas to be quite interesting. Less than two hours ago, I raised to the top of the page a thread called "Kaite's Mits/Julie's Teeth". This thread was started by me and it deals with the same episode that had the hand clapping. I would still be very interested in what people think of the content of this episode!

I recently read a post by someone who liked the episode known as "Samantha's Protest". Even though his reasons for likeing it were quite different from mine, I am happy that there is another fan of that episode out there! In any event, I told him that, if he liked that episode, he might want to read what I said about it in my two recent posts, "The Flintstones" and "Katie's Mits/Julie's Teeth". Well being that this thread was also originally about this episode, I am bringing it to the top of the page to see what he or anyone else thinks of it! Also, it seems that a lot of people are frequenting this page at the moment. Because of this, I have decided to strike while the iron is hot, bring some oldies but goodies to the top of the page and see what other people think of what we wrote about once upon a time!

One thing that I will have to confess is that my original intent when I posted this thread was to feed into my own obsession with the episode called "Samantha's Protest"! The circumstances in which poetic justice was brought to Katie is something that I seem to be unable to get my fill of! However, the aspect that you guys seem to be more interested in discussing is that of the recording of this and other episodes. Well, this leads me to a new question. Are any of you fans of the seventies show called "What's Happening!!"? If you are and if the recording of shows is you main interest, you might want to head over to that page of this site right now! The thread on the top of that page is one regarding people's points of view about this very issue!

Even though the thread that I brought to the top of the page less than half an hour ago has not generated any responses so far, I see that it does have some additional views. This lets me know that there still are some fans surfing the site! Because of this, I have decided to see what happens when I bring this one to the top. The main thing that I am interested in feedback regarding is what people think of the poetic justice of this episode.

By looking at the number of views on each post, I can see that there are, by all means, people coming to this page! Because of this, I am doing what I can to stimulate some conversation. There are certain topics that seem to be of interest to fans. Because of this, I am trying to bring to the top of the page threads that deal with these topics. This is a good case and point right here!

It seems that, for some reason, this page has recently gotten a whole lot of new life breathed into it! Maybe people have depleted what they can think of to say on other pages and so they come over here. In any event, because of the number of new views, I have been experimenting with bringing different old threads to the top of the page to see if people would respond to them. At this point, I am raising this one to the top just for the heck of it!
