Golf was banned in England in 1457 because it was considered a distraction
from the serious pursuit of archery. Popcorn was first eaten by Europeans in 1621, when settlers at Plymouth received a deerskin bag of "popped corn" from Native American Quadequina. Louis XV was the first person to use an elevator: in 1743 his "flying chair" carried him between the floors of Versailles palace. The Flat Earth Society was founded in 1800. Today, despite 200 years of evidence to the contrary, its members continue to believe that the Earth is flat. The first jeans were made in 1849 by Bavarian immigrant Levi Strauss as hard-wearing attire for California gold-miners. In 1959--after its 1957 success with the Frisbee--the Wham-O company introduced the Hula Hoop and sold 25 million hoops in four months. There are at least 1 million insects for each of the Earth's 6 billion humans-- together the insects would weight at least 12 times as much as the human race. Boomerang bullets were patented in the U.S. in 1870. Designed to fire in a curved line, the obvious drawback lay in the danger of the bullet traveling in a complete circle! The longest-ever movie was the 85-hour "The Cure for Insomnia," which was not released commercially. The very first radio broadcast in the US was sent on Dec. 24, 1906, from Brant Rock, MA, by Professor Reginald Aubrey Essenden. The first demonstration of television was given by John Logie Baird in 1926, but his mechanical "Televisor" could not transmit pictures and sound at the same time. The first country to have television was the United Kingdom. The first professional football game was played in Pennsylvania in 1895. [Source: The Best of Everything (2000)] |

before the pilgrams landed at Plymoth Rock, they first stopped at Massachusets Bay because they had run out of beer.
