Just saw this very charming ep today on my Shout! set. Love Rick's friends, Dave and IMHO you can never get too much of Rick. He was definitely the big talent in the family, God rest his soul.
The only thing I "didn't like" (and am saying this facietiously) was ALL THAT ICE CREAM. The darn ep gave me the worst craving for a banana split - which is the last thing I can have with my elev. blood sugar. I'm gonna have a Tasti Delight later to quell the urge. (But since I've lost 16lbs on my diet & I'm going to go out to a lovely lunchoenette in Bklyn later in the week and have a scoop of home made ice cream. Funny ice cream is the only sweet I really miss. ) This gr8 ep is just one more reason to "Shout!" out a big thank you for this very nice DVD set. Hope they keep coming!!!! |

Way to go, Rich! Just take a small bit and that should solve you're ice cream craving. Wathing this show will sure give you an ice cream craving, so be warned.

On the other note Honeybea, I'm really grateful I can successfully practice portion control - because if you can't the only other alternatives are total abstinance from the unhealthy foods or totally giving in to the urge with its attendant NEGATIVE HEALTH consequences. I don't deprive myself anything I really want - instead - I just have a sm. portion of it. Like they had popcorn shrimp at a salad bar where I get my lunch. In the old days, I would have filled a small container jam packed with them. Instead, I just took 3-4 small pieces along my mostly green salad & chicken. Same with ice cream too. One sm. scoop of REALLY GOOD ice cream will do it for me. Probably the smartest thing I did was totally cut out regular sodas and junk like Hi C etc. And when I do have real juice its like 4 oz mixed with 8-10 oz seltzer. |

Very frustrating when some of the official releases have the songs and then some are clearly cut out. Especially disappointing when the song was actually part of the episode and not one of the songs tacked on to the end of the show. |

A Man without a family is one of my favorites because it's one of the few that really have a sentimental flavor to them.
Ozzie really learns a lesson in that one about being careful what you say and wish for. And it wasn't like the boys were staying away to be cruel or punish Oz for what he said. They just thought about the situation and thought ya know what, we have been rather invading the Nelson home they weren't really being fair by always taking over the Nelson home. So they decided to rotate hanging out at eachothers houses. Which was a fair resolution. I don't know about you but I wouldn't want a bunch of teenagers hanging out at my house every night blaring music, playing drums, and taking over my house every day. So I don't blame Ozzie one bit for backing David up about how inconvient it is with Ricky and his friends taking over every night. One of my other favorites that has a similar sentimental feeling to it is, The Man Across The Street. If you haven't seen it, after being outside playing football with Thorny and the boys, Ozzies a mess. He and Thorny meet their new neighbor. Darby. Darby's a lot different from what we know of him later on in the series. Darb's very prim and proper. He wears fancy suits and is very dignified. Ozzie and Thorny rather mock Darby and his clothes and uptightness after he leaves. Ricky and Darbys son are upstairs working on their homework. The boys leave and Ozzie takes a look at the paper in the typewriter. An essay for English about their father. The first part Ozzie really likes, among other things it talks about their mutal love of ice cream of course. lol then the next paragraph, says 'I wish my father could be more like the man across the street. A boy sure would be lucky to have a father like him.' Ozzie's crushed. He looks at himself all disheveled, looking a mess and carrying on like a child playing football and Ricky's ashamed of him. Ozzie vows to change his ways so Ricky can be proud of him. Suzie calls Ozzie the 'Peter Pan' of the neighborhood, which doesn't do much to help the situation. Ozzie starts to try to emulate Darby, the man across the street. Everyone wonders what's up with Oz and his new image. Come to find out, the paper was that of Mickey Darby's. It was he who wished his dad Darb, could be more like the man across the street, Ozzie. Ozzie goes back to his fun lovin' ways and Darby comes out in some ridiculous looking 1920's football uniform ready to get in the game with Oz and Thorny. That one too is a favorite of mine for it's sentimentality. You just feel so bad for Ozzie thinking Ricky's embarassed by him and he's let his family down. |

ILUVO&H, a very nice and warm-hearted ep to be sure. But the kids WERE hanging out at 'ol Oz's quite a bit - when they're away totally he realizes how much he misses them - and that all he wanted was MODERATION - which is a very basic lesson one learns as they go thru life- that most extremes tend to wear you out one way or another - guess there's a reason the phrase "happy medium" got invented. But man, ALL THAT ICE CREAM - did you get a craving for some because I sure did.
Unf. I don't have Man Across The Street but hope one day I will! |

it was a fun nice episode.......and when they brought home ice cream and I was doing my big
This show and ice cream--honestly! I noticed Rick and Darb's son were pals for awhile during these transitional seasons (from the early "I don't mess around boy" phase to the later "call me Rick" mature phase). Darb's son also shows up in "Road Race", which I also rewatched--I think I prefer the Mill Creek version.

You would think with all the ice cream in these episodes that some ice cream company was sponsoring the show. lol We see and are referenced to ice cream a heck of a lot more than Kodak, Coke a Cola, Quaker Oats and Aunt Jamima pancakes.
Those Nelsons loved their ice cream. Can't say I blame them. I could go for a bowl right now! |

I will always remember the huge ice cream cones in the classic " Tutti Fruiti" episode.
