McNabb Optimistic About 2008

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Donovan McNabb threw bullets Tuesday morning during the Eagles’ first training camp practice of 2008 at Lehigh University. He dropped some bombs on the rest of the NFC in his press conference afterwards.

“I don’t [fear anybody],” McNabb said. “We beat the Cowboys [last year in the second meeting] and we should have beat them in the first game. The Redskins, we should have beaten them in the first game. The Giants, we should have beat them both times. And it’s not just teams in our own conference. It’s teams in the NFC period. I feel we can compete with all of them. And if you ask those teams, they will tell you the same. We have a team that you have to look out for.

“It all starts with me and it goes through the whole offense. … If we [have to go 13-3], we’ll do that.”

McNabb’s confidence can easily be construed as arrogance considering the Eagles were dominated and lost by 21 points in their meeting with Dallas last season. They were also inept offensively in their first loss to the Giants, when McNabb was sacked 12 times, and the Eagles failed to get into the end zone. It’s possible reality and optimism became entangled somewhere during the team’s eight losses last season.

The Eagles can take solace in the fact that McNabb is feeling good – both emotionally and physically. He experienced soreness in his throwing shoulder earlier this summer and was forced to miss the final week of minicamp. He’s back now with no apparent aftereffects.

“It took some rest and stretching [to improve],” McNabb said. “In this position I play, it’s just repetition and continuing to throw the routes and getting that velocity back that you would throw in game speed. It’s very similar to a pitcher.

“If I’m a pitcher throwing 25-30 pitches and all of a sudden throwing 85-90 pitches in a game, you don’t see so many pitchers going through it now without tightness. Tightness, which is what it is, not tendinitis.”

Tightness or tendinitis – really it’s just semantics – the 31-year-old five-time Pro Bowler will be closely monitored throughout camp. That’s to be expected for any player in coach Andy Reid’s newly minted “Over-30 Club,” but even more so for a quarterback that has experienced a litany of injuries throughout his career.

“We’ll monitor it,” Reid said. “He has been throwing in Arizona and seems to be feeling pretty good. We’ll have to keep a close eye on that and make sure that we limit his throws to see exactly where he is.”

Where McNabb is right now is a very tenuous spot. He has heir apparent Kevin Kolb peering over his shoulder and no more guaranteed money left in his once monumental $115 million deal. McNabb’s future depends on the team’s success this season, and he’s surely going to need disgruntled running back Brian Westbrook to help.

McNabb danced around questions about Westbrook’s contract, although he did think the Pro Bowl running back would be at training camp Thursday when veterans are obligated to report. He noted – as did Reid on Monday – that contract negotiations are part of the game.

“In some situations, it will happen to all of us,” McNabb said. “Who knows if it will be me next year.”

Even with questions about his future, the contacts of Westbrook and Lito Sheppard, and being part of the “Over-30 Club,” training camp has the same feel as always. McNabb and Reid are entering their 10th year together, still running the same drills and answering the same questions on the same campus.

“I think anytime you begin to dwell on the past, that means your future is not bright,” McNabb said. “Every year that I come [to camp], I try challenging myself to do something different. I look at it as this is my job and I’m not going anywhere else, so just kind of get used to it.

“We have been here for 10 years – not too many people have been together in a coach-quarterback combination that long that I can remember. I think for both of us, we’ve had a lot of success – more success than down years – and we want to keep it that way and continue to get better each year.”

Unfortunately the situation has become progressively more difficult each season. The competitiveness of the NFC East could be reach its summit this year with Dallas considered by most to be the conference’s best team, the Giants coming off a Super Bowl championship and the Redskins reaching the playoffs in 2007 and recently adding perennial Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor. McNabb still believes – probably foolishly – the Eagles are considered favorites, not underdogs.

“A lot of people have picked us to win the NFC,” he said. “And rightfully so. It’s not that hard to see the type of team that we have. You don’t win NFC East championships or the NFC on paper. You put it out on the field.

“Our team hasn’t changed that much where we can’t win the NFC again.”

The rest of the NFC, especially those with the Eagles on their schedule, will surely get wind of this training camp optimism. Especially those NFC East teams.

Something is seriously wrong with him, needs medication

That is a stupid ass statement to make by McNabb. I don't think the Eagles will be in last place this year, hell if they got Randy Moss to sign that deal they offered him a couple months ago, an up and coming safety to back up Dawkins, I'd say they were perenial super bowl contenders. Dallas is a great team I must say- despite my hatrid for them. Except they have too many distractions and "outlaws" if you will, on their team. T.O. is 100 distractions in 1, dumbass "Pac-Man Jones," Tank Johnson, Roy Williams (not a TO, just an idiot in how he tackles people) and a couple others. Not to mention, Jerry Jones is the laughing stock of the league.
