Dog Off The Menu In Beijing During Olympics - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries."

The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.

Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

i remember when i first heard that they ate dogs in asia back in high school, i was freaked out, and disgusted.
but that's definitely a good idea to take it off the menu. even if the western visitors aren't animal rights activists, the fact that they're serving a dog is gross. i would just imagine someone eating my dog the entire time...

My curiousity has gotten the best of me.

I like dogs. I had a dog when I was growing up.

My dog Penny was an great dog. I lived with her for 15 years. She was such a a wonderful, warm, amazing creature. I loved her to death...

But honestly, I would be interested in sampling what dog meat tastes like.

Does that make me a bad person?

I had a Filipino social studies teacher in the 7th grade over thirty years ago who actually served dog meat for a sort of Japanese pot luck. I chose not to partake of that particular entree. It's considered a delicacy in China and Korea, just as cat is in the Caribbean and elsewhere. NO THANK YOU.

I don't believe in eating pets as cuisine.

So the story was, how did he find said dog? He allegedly found some stray dog around Howard Road up the street from the school, and, well..... So the story goes. I don't know if it was true, but it just didn't sit well with me to be eating DOG.

Yecch, I think I'm going to become vegetarian.

The other thing I have no desire to try is alligator meat, although I hear its good. Just the idea of eating one of those creepy things takes away my appetite.

My brother-in-law(who will try anything once) tasted dog meat when he was in Viet Nam. He said that the meat is salty. YUM!

I don't get the big deal. Why is it right to eat certain animals but not others? Just because we don't have little cows and piggies as pets makes them okay to eat? I mean, I've had beef, chicken, duck, goose, turkey, ham, buffalo, deer, elk, etc. They don't eat beef, for example, in India because they think it's wrong, doesn't mean they're exactly wrong for thinking so. Different cultures cultivated things differently for centuries, doesn't mean they were right before and they're "wrong" now. Though I heard they did the same thing in Seoul during the '88 Olympics. I don't see why eastern nations need to even bother doing this just because of westerners.

i agree. it's fine to think it's gross but there's probably some silly psychological reason as to why people believe it's "wrong", like that the dogs are too cute.
