what was this about? Is it funny? How funny? Because I've been thinking about getting it from Netflix, but I've never heard of it.

This show was about a couple who met when he was a soldier and she a nurse during the Korean war and had a brief romance, then were separated when he had to go to Korea. They wrote to each other, but his letter to her was lost, so they both moved on and married others. 38 years later they cross paths again--he is divorced, she is widowed--when he is writing a book and gets a secretary from the agency she now runs. It is very funny IMHO, in a sweet, family oriented way (with some innuendo in the case, for example, of her grown daughter with his publisher, and one episode with the writer visiting an on-again-off-again lady friend).

I've watched a few episodes of this and it definitely has it's funny moments.

Agreed! BBC America should put this one back on their lineup for sure!

I loooove it , the series is probably the most realistically written relationship in sitcom history, the characters are so REAL!....and its amazingly funny....
My fave all-time line from the show has Lionel at a party, talking about raising children with a woman highly into ecology, and she asks him: "What can the "green" child have to look forward to in this day and age?" And Lionel answers in his most sarcastic voice.... "Blending in nicely with the lawn, I presume!"

I guess I'm lucky with the PBS station I have here. With their Britcom line-up every week, other shows are rotated and fresh shows are added but As Time Goes By, AYBS? and KUA always stay. And it's really nice that they finally aired the last season as of late.

I love this show. I'd say that if you're in the mood for a gentle, heartfelt comedy, this is definitely the show for you.

My PBS station just recently aired what I guess was a reunion or retrospective show last week--at any rate I had never seen it before. The show itself is on every night at 11 (having just started its millionth go-round LOL!), and on Sat they run 2 episodes in a row starting at 9 PM (preceded by 2 of AYBS and KUA as well)!

It irritated me when I first saw this here. I mean, don't get me wrong. I LOVED it. But the station showed this during a pledge month before they even bothered to show the last season, complete with clips of shows they haven't aired yet. Way to spoil, GPB.

Here it comes on Saturday at 9:30.

If you've watched enough Britcoms, you'll know that the Brits have 2 identifiable kinds of humor: the outrageous, wacky, way-out funny; and the dry, witty, more subtle humor. As Time Goes By Fits more into the second type of humor. I love ATGB and have seen it numerous times. I'm even trying to save up so that I can buy the whole show on DVD. If you're looking for the outrageous, wacky type of humor this may not fit, but it's still funny all-the-same.

I'm really surprised to see this thread go dead. ATGB is a classy situation comedy staring Dame Judi Dench, and, in my opinion, an outstanding and talented supporting cast. It still airs on PBS (has for at least a decade) and is still in high demand as indicated during the fund drives. Also their is a fan club and dedicated forum that is very active today.

It's not the silly type of comedy show that many are, but rather a relaxed mix of humor and life situations of a couple re-united after nearly four decades. My favorites are when they travel to visit the rich eccentric father of the leading male character. Rock on!!!

Check your PBS listings and give it a try.

Local ATGB fans will get a huge helping of Judi Dench, should they want, this coming Saturday. Immediately after the usual back to back ATGB airings, GPTV will repeat the mini series "Return to Cranford" in it's entirety in two 90 minute segments

I didn't see it first time around, nor have I seen the original Cranford (which has a cast of many British stars I am now familiar with). And since I haven't, I may just record this and hope to see the original some time. Naw!!! I'll record it yes, but, I'll also watch it! It's in HD.

Other PBS affiliates will probably do the same at some time, if they haven't already. Check your local listings,

this is my favorite show of all time- I have amazon prime and watch the episodes over and over for free- it's so annoying (although I realize public tv has to do fund drives) for there to be nothing but fund drives for weeks at a time, pre-empting the british sitcoms. I just watched one of the beginning episodes where lionel and jean found each other again, and when they talked about the lost letter, he joked that maybe it was in the royal war museum. I don't know which season this next show aired in, but it was when jean was "bored" and lionel went to the war museum and the letter actually WAS there. what a touching show. I absolutely love it. too bad there will never be another reunion show, with rocky and madge gone in real life. it's fun to go to imbd and check out what the actors are doing now. this show kind of gives you hope for humanity, that maybe things like this truly do happen in real life. it will forever be one of my favorites

You must remember this, too:

Judi Dench is now DAME Judi Dench, who was also "M" in many of the later James Bond movies, among other things.

In no small part, she made "As Time Goes By" a warm kind of show that made it unique among the Britcoms of the PBS era (I used to watch it every Thursday night on the St. Louis PBS outlet, and I still miss it today).
