No one. To this day I have yet to see an actor whose acting was so powerful in a sitcom. The only other sitcom actor that may come close is James Avery. Esther Rolle was a very good actress as well. Sitcom wise to me her equal would be Phylicia Rashad. It's a shame now how looks are more important than talent these days.

I think no one could replace James or Florida.Esther Rolle and John Amos are powerful actors, and for those roles, impossible to replace.

I'd say Lou Gossett. I realize he played as Thelma's fiancee. But in my opinion, his acting talents are just as good as John Amos'

The only person I might buy in the role (in addition to the aforementioned Lou Gossett) is Paul Winfield. But not replacing John Amos, I believe, was the right way to go.
