TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - July 2, 2008 -- Three of six people in New Jersey who mistakenly drank a small amount of torch lamp oil thinking it was apple juice remain hospitalized, including a child in critical condition.

The state's Poison Information & Education System says the girl will live the rest of her life with damaged lungs.

An 84-year-old woman from Burlington County died Monday night after suffering lung damage caused by ingesting the kerosene-like substance.

Officials say the victims ingested a small amount and neither the smell nor taste alerted them to the danger. An official says the oil lamp and juice containers look similar.

The other victims were from Bergen County, Hillsborough, Elizabeth and Paterson.
Poison control officials are warning doctors and hospitals about how to treat victims

What I don't get is why was lamp oil kept in the same area as apple juice? Juice is normally kept in the fridge or in the food cabinets until opened and neither is the place for lamp oil.

...I'd think that the two would have distinct scents to them. Apple juice smells like, well, APPLES. Lamp oil would definitely NOT smell like apples. WTF?

I keep my lamp oila dn my apple juice right next to each other on the same shelf.

Because in my mind it's the 1880s and I live with the Ingalls family.
